President Bush, please don't make me miss ED!

I know that war is a big deal, so please don't call me un-American. But with the switch to Fridays, I will have gone 10 days since I last saw my favorite show. And I need to know if it's Carol or Frankie in that knight outfit.

There's a good chance that a lot of primetime shows will be postponed, especially during the first few days, and most of them really suck or would have been reruns anyway, so please, please Mr. President, wait until Saturday to start the war. And, if you can, please try to have it over by next Thursday.

Thanks,

dolphinboy

i am glad that someone else was thinking of this. with the war AND the ncaa tourney, will they even try to show ed or just put these episodes on hold for a few weeks until things settle down a bit. even though i want the shows NOW, i hope they hold off on them so they can have a chance for some decent ratings. this is a very deilicate time for ed and i hope that nbc doesn't just throw it to the wolves.

Nice to know people care more about watching entertainment TV shows over knowing how our country is doing in a war.

The coverage is always there. That's what CNN is for, and the internet.

Also, about 5 minutes of what they say is actual news, the rest is just rehashing the same thing over and over.

I haven't been real active on DVD Talk but after reading this I'm definitely going to post my thoughts on this. This thread makes me sick to my stomach. American men and women are fighting and dying in Iraq and you're pissed you might miss your d@mn TV show!?! You've got to be kidding me! Get some perspective. These American heroes put on a uniform and fight so that you can enjoy the freedom to sit around and watch TV! You hold so little respect for their sacrifice that you dare to moan about a TV sitcom in the same sentence! Maybe try watching a little of the coverage, and try to gain a bit of respect for those men and women you are watching. I guarantee they are worried about a bit more that going a few days without their TV show.
Oh yea, had you been watching today you'd know that the Iraqis captured some of our forces today and are probably torturing and brutalizing them, sorry if that interferes with your plans for the evening!
I know many of you will not agree with me and think that I am being overly critical. Try to take a step back and realize what your comments sound like to those of us with friends and family fighting in the Gulf.

Okey dokey. As somebody whose post offended you, I'll try to smooth things over. First, I think it goes without saying that nobody truly bases their support for / opposition to this war on how it will affect primetime TV. We all realize that there are significantly more important things riding on the outcome: coalition / civilian casualities, management of post-Saddam Iraq, potential to further radicalize anti-US sentiments in the Muslim world. Furthermore, please keep in mind that this thread is in TV Talk, where, I'd argue, we prefer to discuss topics other than "coalition / civilian casualities, management of post-Saddam Iraq, potential to further radicalize anti-US sentiments in the Muslim world." My missing "Angel" is totally irrelevant in a geopolitical sense - but it's a valid topic to bring up when the forum is devoted to television.

Now, suppose somebody waltzed into a serious war discussion in the Other Forum (or, more recently, the War Forum) and declared, "You guys all bring up some compelling arguments to support the pro- and anti-war positions. But for me, I'll have to wait and see how the conflict affects my sitcom schedule before I can finalize my opinion on it." That would be entirely unacceptable. See where I'm going with this? In the grand scheme of things, a pre-empted episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" is quite trivial. But the thing is, a forum devoted to something as trivial as TV is the appropriate place to complain about it.

Will you agree that the context in which the comments are made makes all the difference?

I don't think anyone here disputes that. But a note about the TV coverage - It's my understanding that "dead air" is a No-No in radio and television. The talking heads have to keep talking (here's the kicker) even when there's nothing new to talk about. I have spent several hours watching Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, etc., and often I find that if a friend walked in and said, "OK. What did I miss?" I'd be able to bring him up to speed in under a minute. Now ask yourself: If Person A is glued to CNN for three hours while Person B watches three hours of dramas, then flips to CNN and learns all that Person A knows within 2 minutes, can you really claim that Person A is somehow "supporting the troops" more effectively than Person B?
Oh yea, had you been watching today you'd know that the Iraqis captured some of our forces today and are probably torturing and brutalizing them, sorry if that interferes with your plans for the evening!
If any DVDTalker even comes close to implying that missing "Yes, Dear" is as much of a tragedy as being tortured by third world thugs, I'll yell at him too.
I know many of you will not agree with me and think that I am being overly critical. Try to take a step back and realize what your comments sound like to those of us with friends and family fighting in the Gulf.
Confession: Nobody I know is over there. I'll delete my previous post in the thread if you find it that out of line. As for being "overly critical," I'd say it's more like you have a lot of positive energy and patriotism that isn't quite being channeled right. I gotta tell ya, I'm rather sensitive to verbal attacks on our military, but this thread doesn't piss me off at all. Whoops! Actually, I just reviewed some of the replies and saw one or two I found mildly offensive. Nothing to get too worked up over, though, because again, nobody believes that a missed sitcom qualifies as a "casualty of war." It's like the OJ Simpson trial from a few years back. If a woman says, "All the networks were covering the courtroom proceedings all day, so I missed my soap operas," I believe it's quite a stretch to accuse her of implying that she (as opposed to the two people OJ butchered) is the "real victim."

Finally, I'll elaborate a bit on my "channeling your energy" remark. You know what I think is *really* obscene? Some of the anti-war protesters. Not all of them, mind you, but the ones who read from the Noam Chomsky Playbook: "America is the world's leading terrorist state!" "This war is all about racism, imperialism, and oil!" "Eliminate US weapons of mass destruction!" "And stop sending aid to Israel (so the Palestinians can suicide-bomb it off the map)!" You might feel that even mentioning TV in a time of war is selfish, but isn't it infinitely more infuriating to hear Americans accusing their own soldiers of being "terrorists"? Why not vent your anger at people who say that type of thing (and truly mean it)?

mtillett, I'm pretty sure that the thread starter was joking, and that even though he wants to see the episode, he wouldn't really put constraints on the President if he could just to see the show.

I could carless about the war, I want to watch my TV Shows. Thats the TRUTH. I shouldn't have to be force-fed this war crap when there are other networks where they should air this 24/7 coverage (CNN). SO excuse me if I want things to get backto the way they were last week, and excuse me if I couldn't careless if our soldiers are in Iraq killing others, and getting killed themselves.
