Matthew Sweet -- new album with the Thorns 5/20

I was looking for some Matthew Sweet information on the web and found this:

http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/thorns/artist.jhtml

I think the text is entirely copied from the Sony music website, so it's pure flack, but at least it's detailed flack.

For those of you not clicking through the link, Sweet has joined Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge to form the Thorns. Their album is coming out May 20.

I'm a little leery -- Mullins and Droge are not exactly the people I would expect to help Sweet deliver "Son of 'Son of Altered Beast'" (because, really, who wants another "Blue Sky on Mars") -- but it's better than nothing (I hope).

Anybody else excited? Anybody heard any of the tracks?

I just listened to "I can't Remember" on VH1's website. Not bad. I'm always going to like Matthew Sweet more as a solo artist. I really hope that he's going to be the lead voice, I don't want to pay hard earned cash for about 3 Matthew Sweet songs and 9 other tracks by Forge/ Mullins.

But as you said, better than nothing.

I'm a little curious. I like Sweet better than the other two guys and I think Sweet's output relies on who he surrounds himself with.

I also like Sweet better than the others; he never got the recognition as a singer/songwriter that he deserved.

Curious pairing. I like Sweet, don't really care for Mullins and have only heard a few songs from Droge. I really hope Sweet is the main voice of this band. He definitely deserves to be.

Who really wants another "Blue Sky on Mars"? Well...I would. I really like that album and thought it was a great follow-up to "100% Fun". Personally I think his last album, "In Reverse", was his weakest yet.

Oh, I really liked "In Reverse," but also liked "100% Fun." "Blue Sky" is my least favorite album (excluding his Columbia stuff... erghh...) -- it lacked oomph and I didn't like the instrumentation.

I have a feeling that this Thorns CD will sound nothing like any of his solo work. I have no idea whether I'll like the end result.

Looks like Target, Best Buy and Circuit City all are going to have this disc for $7.99 this week.

Thanks for resurrecting the thread -- I was going to post this myself and ask anyone who gets the disc to post their thoughts here. I wasn't planning on getting it before, but a decent review or two might be enough for me to spend the $7.99...

So, did anyone buy this today? I did, but haven't unwrapped it yet.

Just was listening to it in the car a little while ago. If you like CSN, then you will LOVE this album. It's like these guys listened to a few hundred CSN songs and then immediately went in the studio to record. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not exactly what I was expecting.
