Best Film of 1958 (ongoing survey)
A quick note:
I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.
This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1958 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.
Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.
Please start your post with your #1 film from 1958 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

- Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

My favorite Hitchcock film, featuring a brilliant mix of suspense, terror, and romance...
1) Vertigo - 10/10
2) A Night to Remember - 9/10
3) Touch of Evil - 8/10
4) The Defiat Ones - 8/10
The only other film of the year that I've seen is the only Cary Grant misstep I've yet witnessed, Indiscreet (4/10).
I'll be back later to fill in the usual oscar list and other notables unless someone else beats me to it (feel free to do so!
)

I have not voted for the Hitchcock film the last two polls because I thought those movies were a tad overrated and there was a better choice. But this one was his best. Easy choice this year:

Not sure what you're confusing it with, but the only Defiant Ones from 1958 that I know of is the classic Stanley Kramer film, starring Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier - not Cary Grant.
'58 was a truly great year - and as great as Vertigo is, I still don't consider it Hitchcock's best. Touch of Evil is, however my favorite Orson Welles film, and definitely one of my top 5 films ever.
1. Touch of Evil
2. Vertigo
3. The Defiant Ones
4. The Last Hurrah
5. Run Silent, Run Deep
6. The Horse's Mouth
7. The Left Handed Gun
8. Mon Oncle
9. The Hidden Fortress
10. I Want to Live!

Looks like a landslide. Funny thing is, I think the movie's overrated, and not Hitchcock's best. I still think it's better than The Big Country or Touch of Evil, which is saying something...
