Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter is the basis for The Outlaw Josey Wales. Carter also wrote The Education of Little Tree, which was also made into a film fairly recently.

What was the original book / short story ??
IMDB only gives Luc Besson writing credit, and doesn't mention anyone else.
