Mean Streets, why R?

Can someone please tell me why Mean Streets is rated R. This isn't a sarcastic question, I really want to know the content is like.

It's a Scorcese movie, which means language and violence. Don't remember any sex, but it's been a while since I've seen it.

Lots of language, lots of violence, lots of nudity. There is definately female full frontal and, if I remember right, some male ass shots, but I'm not positive about those. The language and violence goes withour saying.

No rape, not even that much violence or nudity. You could count the scenes on one hand, I think, if you wanted to count scenes with violence and nudity.

Tamer than Goodfellas and Taxi Driver, in that regard.

As for the important things - smoking and blasphemy - well this didn't lose as many points as some films, like Frankenstein (1930).
