One of the more underrated films from the past year, The Cat's Meow is a smart ensemble film that comes closer to a Gosford Park than State and Main (haven't seen Cradle Will Rock). I thought it was an interesting story, but what hooked me were Bogdanovich's period detail (done on a very slim budget in Europe) and the fine performances. A scene-stealing Eddie Izzard portraying Charlie Chaplin impressed me. Kirsten Dunst is also very good.

If you're interested in the persona and myth of W.R. Hearst and the politics of moviemaking in 1924, Bogdanovich paints quite a picture.

I liked it but it wasn't fantastic. I saw it at a festival a year or so ago and Bogdanovich was there. Seeing him do impersonations of Welles et al was VERY entertaining.

I haven't seen "cradle will rock" but I totally agree with sundog in mentioning Gosford Park. Thinking about it, I find them to be very similar in feel and execution.

Is it playing somewhere near you or are you thinking about buying it on DVD?

I thought it was disappointing. I liked Dunst and a couple of the other performances, but the story was better told as a short anecdote in RKO 281 and The battle over Citizen Kane.
