thanks Krug - interesting lead.
That being said, I am going to make a blind Oscar Best Foreign Film nominee prediction. However, as is always the case, the Academy always throw in some bizarre choices (remember "Everybody Famous"? I doubt it). So I doubt if it will look anything like it, but ah well:
Sure bets:
Nowhere in Africa - the reviewer said it right - Oscar bait
City of God - despite what the reviewer said, I still think this has an excellent chance (expecially since it's Miramax we're talking about here). Plus, Amores Perros was nominated, and that was equally street-gritty.
Good chances:
The Crime of Father Amaro - despite being greet rathe rlukewarm, it somehow seems to be the type of film the Academy may like.
Hero - Miramax. Zhang Yimou. All-star cast. So what if it is a propagandist piece? It is visually stunning!
The Man Without a Past - less likely, but its acclaim and humor may warm up those stodgy Academy members. I hope.
Devdas- ya never know, what with the whole increase in interest in Bollywood (The Guru?!??!?). Heck, I didn't think Lagaan would get a nom.
No way in hell (for the conservative Academy members):
The Son - way too jittery, camera-wise. Dark.
Lilja 4-Ever - too dreary and depressing
Pinocchio - after the worst review in years? No.
8 Women - because it is terrible in how it ruins nearly all of its actresses. And I hate Ozon.
And lastly:
Oasis - I really, really like Lee Chang-Dong. He is IMO one of the fastest rising new directors, and his previous work really stunned me (Peppermint Candy). Oasis has been a critical hit everywhere it's played. I hope that the Academy will give it a chance.
So yeah, I guess my noms are:
Nowhere in Africa
City of God
Hero
The Man Without a Past
Oasis (wishful thinking?)

wow....i want that job!
I'm most interested to see City of God...i've heard a couple snippets about it and they were all very good.
LILJA 4-EVER (Sweden) also looks pretty interesting.....even if it does have the Prince flair in the title....

I guess he didn't like Firedancer (Afghanistan).
I am curious to see his review of "Mondays in the Sun", Spains entry (and one which I know very little about). It beat out "Talk to Her" (Almodovar's new movie) somehow, so it must have some redeeming qualities.
FIREDANCER (Afghanistan)
Where to start? 24 years on this committee and I've never seen a more incompetently made film. Period. It wasn't that it was boring, particularly. Many people in the audience did stick it out to the end, since the story...what there was of it...almost worked. It's just that the film seems to have been shot, edited and dubbed by a crew of really bad amateurs...
