When i was in college i spent many many hours playing muds. Unfortunately since i got so used to playing these games for free i could never bring myself to actually pay per month for any of the new graphic muds.
Ones i played a fair amount on were these: JediMud
EnsiMud
HoloMud
Broken Seals
and finally a straight up PK mud called Ground Zero.
Anyone else play any of these - it would be especially funny to run into someone i might have gamed with years ago.

I've played Simutronics' games since about '94. Not really MUDs in the true sense of the word... they're a lot more advanced than the typical MUD.

I was a die-hard mud addict back in the day. I too refused to give any graphic mud any money when they were so shallow compared to any of the good old muds.
I was on a ton, in order of most time spent:
Gateway
Lost Wishes
Muddog
Genocide
3 Kingdoms
Lustymud
Hidden Worlds
probably a few more I forgot about

I still believe graphic MUDs can't hold a candle up to a nice text-based game. Give me a good ole Simutronics game over Everquest any day. And where else can you actually find a good ancient greek RPG? It's a nice alternative to the wizards and warriors of your typical RPG which has been done thousands of times. Though we still do have the warriors... and priests, hehe.

xmiyux, as with you I played a number of muds way back and haven't moved on to the graphics muds like Asheron's Call. Too used to free. And too used to going on muds to have fun chatting and role playing instead of merely collecting lots of armor and items to "trade" for money outside the game. Finally worked my way up to wizard in some and have now quit.
I don't dare start playing again because it was addictive. Because I touch type fast, the chatting is very addictive, particularly if you have several muds running at once and you are playing in all of them at the same time. heh heh
