M.I.A. "Kala"

This is my favorite album of 2007 so far and I'm one of those people who normally slams the hell out of the same 'ol rap and hip hop sound. She really nails it. Sense of fun, catchy, interesting with plenty of clever nods to other great tunes (Modern Lovers "Roadrunner" right off the bat, The Clash in another tune). I like it even more than "Arular".

Anyone else digging on this one?

I'm loving it. I've had the song "Boyz" in my head for weeks now.

into my head... well that and

Best record of the year! Boyz is bouncy and exciting and brings a smile to my face, but I don't really think it is a fun overall album. It is clear that she chose to do her own thing, and I would say that she even went more socially conscious than on Arular...which is saying a lot. I love the fact that she puts just about every hip hop producer to shame by bringing in sounds and rhythms that they have never imagined (i.e. sounds that don't come from a casio). And she pulls a lot from great songs (pixies, clash, etc..) into the mix without us even knowing it.

Also, the song $20 is the song of the year. Just seems so aware.

Saw her last night opening for Bjork. Great, energetic performance. This really is a good, upbeat album. She even came on during Bjork's 'Earth Intruders' and messed around with some of the electronics. At the end of the show, Bjork said she really wanted to thank Mia.

Blender #1 album of 2007
Rolling Stone #1
Pitchfork #3
Spin #4

Did this album ever receive any mainstream radio or MTV/VH-1 airplay? There are a few songs on this album I don't like, but the winners are definitely tops of the year.

After watching those videos posted above and hearing the music, I can't tell if you guys are serious or just being really sarcastic.

It's all about taste, I'm not a big fan personally but it happens.

I wound up buying that Disco Dancer movie for my sister as a gag gift, Devo covered another song from it a while back. What a weird weird movie.

Absolutely, 100% serious. I like music that is catchy, intelligent and filled with a sense of humor and sometimes wonder. This album is smart as hell and a lot of fun to listen to. It's sonically adventurous with samples from all over the world. I actually HATE most hip-hop, mainly for the silly themes. M.I.A. actually has a few lyrical moments that make me cringe, but overall she's got something going that few possess.

Brian, do you like any type of dance music at all? Electronica, rap, disco, etc.?

edit (I see I just rephrased what I said in my OP... oh well)

"Paper Planes" is damn close to being my song of the year.

The full song:

(samples The Clash's "Straight to Hell" for people who didn't know; i.e. me).

I. Love. M.I.A.. and there's something about her, but my God. What a babe.

I love Paper Planes. It fits perfect in the Pineapple Express trailer.

She lipsynched most, that or it was her backup singer. With pop music (and I consider M.I.A. pop) I don't really care if they lipsynch. I go to see them "perform" not necessarily sing. Any other band I see, if they're not singing, that's sort of bullshit. Her mic was definitely on and working, but there was still a backup track. To me, not a big deal.

Do you like the song? I'd say it's one of the best songs of last year.

Actually, I started this thread as a joke. Can't stand when hip hop strays from thuggish, misoginistic, "huh huh yeah yeah" by-the-numbers beats.
