Eastern Promises — (Cronenberg, 2007)

Eastern Promises
Director: David Cronenberg
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts, Vincent Cassel

The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), who is tied to one of London's most notorious organized crime families. His carefully maintained existence is jarred when he crosses paths with Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers potential evidence against the family.

I guess David likes working with Viggo. This looks great. September's already looking up. First this, then The Kingdom.

It looks good for what it is, but I'd like the old Cronenberg to come back.

That looks about as much like a Cronenberg as A History of Violence did. Let's hope this one's better.

Don't get me wrong, I love Cronenbergs older flicks, but I really enjoyed HoV. This one looks pretty good as well. I appreciate that he hasn't lost his gore factor even though his movies are more mainstream now.

Looks great to me. Great cast, great director, interesting story... could be good.

I personally enjoyed A History of Violence a good deal, save for the awkward gratuitous sex scenes.

A History of Violence was Cronenberg's best movie since Dead Ringers or Naked Lunch.

I can't wait for this one. I loved A History of Violence and I think Cronenberg looks to be in the zone again with this one. I've got high hopes and the cast is excellent - who would have thought that Viggo Mortensen could end up being Cronenberg's muse

For those of you wanting the "old" Cronenberg to come back, Entertainment Weekly had a brief blurb on Eastern Promises this week. Relevant parts:

Has the creator of classic creepfests like Dead Ringers and The Fly officially left his old ways behind? "All of my movies have dealt with crime in the sense of transgression," Cronenberg says. "In the last two, it's more traditional. But creatively, there's a real continuity amongst the films." So, not even one more man-fly creature? For old time's sake? "You get bored with yourself," he says. "I think it's good to get out of your own rut."

Despite the film's "normal" subject matter, [Vincent] Cassel, who plays the scion of the Mafia clan, says the director put his unique stamp on the material. "You have forbidden things in the movie, but it's more about what you think you're seeing than what you really saw," he says. "In that sense, it's a very David Cronenberg movie."

Isn't there an all-nude-dude steamroom fight in this? I recall somwhere mentioning that's the 10-minute cneterpiece of the movie.

I hope this is good.

If it isn't and it doesn't do well, at least then the old-tyme Cronenberg fans will probably get a man-has-sex-with-a-machine movie soon after.

I disagree, I thought History was overrated and the ending truly hamfisted. The trailer for his latest didn't impress me in the slightest.

Looks awesome. I've been a fan of everything Cronenberg has done and this looks to be no exception. I like Viggo and I LOVE Naomi. Mmmmm.... Naomi. Uh, excuse me for a minute...

Ok, so yea. I'll be seeing this asap.

History of Violence was great, and Naomi Watts is my favourite actress. So I'm there.
