- Major award winner - Recognition from competitive events including awards from peer groups, critics, guilds and major film festivals.

- Popularity over time - Including success at the box office, television and cable airings, and DVD/VHS sales and rentals.

- Historical significance - A film's mark on the history of the moving image through visionary narrative devices, technical innovation, or other groundbreaking achievements.

- Cultural impact - A film's mark on American society in matters of style and substance.

New list is lame.

I greatly prefer the new list if only for the climbs made by Vertigo, The Searchers, City Lights, and The General.

The most questionable addition to the list: Sophie's Choice.

The Sixth Sense is a horrible choice. It's a great example of the power of editing but it only works once.

Schindler's List still isn't Top 10 material.

I dont like any of the "newer" movie additions, especially LOTR which i still dont find the appeal in. So many other great newer movies that could have been included and wasnt. Other than that the list is pretty good. Love the addition of Do the Right Thing but wish The Shining had made the list, especially since its lightyears better than Sixth Sense.

I believe it was too recent to be eligible for the list last time.

LOTR shouldn't be on there, it's just about a bunch of midgets running around a forest.

I have to say I'm disappointed with some of the newer films they chose. I like that some classic films made some debuts but I'm scratching my head at what they kept on the list. How do you kick out Giant and The Third Man but keep Easy Rider, Forrest Gump, and M*A*S*H?

I love seeing Raging Bull so high. I don't like seeing Schindler's List do better.

I wonder if DVDs had anything to do with this list. Sullivan's Travels, Sunrise and Spartacus get their do while The African Queen takes a huge freefall.

What strikes me as odd is how many old movies are new to the list, replacing other classic movies.

It's not like the new classics added got any better since the last list, nor the ones that go the boot any worse.

I just about vomited when I saw The Sixth Sense on the show. (I began to throw up when they said "a horror film from the last decade" - I knew what it was even though TSS is not a horror film.) I will never understand the popularity of that film. To me, it's the only one on the list that really sticks out like a sore thumb. I may not agree with the placement of other films on the list, but I hate to think that L.A. Confidential got left out in favor of this.

However, the jumps made by The Searchers and City Lights almost make up for it. Almost.

Did anyone else think "oh shit" when they said a film about gladiators was coming up, and then was relieved when it turned out to be Spartacus?
