Any More News on ST:TNG The Complete Series Box Set?

I'm really wanting to get this when it comes out September 4th. Has there been any more news about it?

As a matter of fact, an update came this morning:

http://tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7474

Not much other than release is pushed back to October 2. No pricing, no features yet.

But it's completely official now, not just a rumor! That's something, isn't it?

Love The Next Generation, don't have any of it yet on DVD, and would be tempted by this. But would need to know if anything has changed from the season sets. If everything is basically the same, and nothing of real value has been added, probably won't be much point in getting this. Prefer original releases.

One exception being The West Wing. What I understand, the season sets were a mix of single-sided and double-sided discs, whereas the complete series uses single-sided only. I detest the decision to release any series, be it a TV show or a movie franchise, without a uniform design.

CBS/Paramount should also include the original telecast of "All Good Things..." along with the "extended" version of the series finale from the seventh season set. I've been holding off on purchasing the last season because they decided not to include the original broadcast. And what will it take to finally see audio commentaries for TNG?

Dave, any word on the "MacGyver" complete series set, or getting them to release the two made-for-TV movies separately for those who already own all seven seasons?

I thought the version included in the boxset was the original broadcast version, and that scenes were only trimmed out for the two-part version that was made for re-runs. I haven't heard of there being an "extended" version.

What's wrong with me? I just spent 20 minutes trying to find out about the "extended version" - why didn't I first read the threads below?

Man, Paramount loves to gouge the Trek fans. You can get nine seasons of The X-Files for under $300 (heck, under $200 if you wait for sales). The seven-season Buffy box retailed for $200. All seven season of WB shows like Gilmore Girls would be less than $350 at the absolute most (but few people pay $50 per season of those shows).

Plus you know they'll be redoing the series for HD within the next few years, probably with updated effects like the current OT airings.

Not that I planned on replacing my original sets anyway (I still haven't even watched through them all... though it's the one TV series I own on DVD that I actually watched the vast majority of).

Way too much. I had thought about replacing my sets, but not at that price.

Under the absolute best (but unlikely) circumstances:

$530 - MSRP
$212 - 40% Normal Discount
$318 - Regular Discounted Price
$64 - 20% DD Sale
$254 - Total Discounted Price

That is still over $36 a season.

TNG was shot on 480i video. I don't even think an HD version is possible.

I'm glad I got mine for about $250 in a previous DD sale. Now if just Voyager and Enterprise would just get a price drop so they're not near $100 per season.

I would consider this but for nowhere close to $500.

I would consider it around the price of the bundled sets.

I usually have no problem double dipping movies if the packaging is updated or improved. But I already love the packaging on the current sets, they seem like special editions already and are the nicest tv show on dvd I own(the only complaint I could see is the shelf space). I picked these up during the 29.99 sale at fry's a while ago so it was about as good a deal as you can get for star trek. But I'd gladly rebuy the four tng movies if they would package them in a case that matches the season sets out now.

Yeah, I'm out of this. I'll just get the old releases when they drop further.

I bought these when they first came out, paying a premium, so I have no plans to re-buy these.

I just wish they'd offer just the box at a nominal price (for people who already own the original sets) so I can transfer the 3/4 shelf space hogging boxes to something smaller and nicer like the Buffy and/or Alias boxes.

TNG like all Star Trek shows from TOS thru late Enterprise were shot in 35mm. TNG, DS9, Voyager were then transfered to 480i for post production (editing, special effects, etc). While it would cost more to remaster TNG/DS9/VOY than TOS per episode it probably wouldn't be significantly more.

Why the hell are Star Trek season sets so much money?

Simply put:

Because Paramount has few viable money making properties.

Also, because for so long they could charge the obscene prices.

With the DD sale, sets are $41.48. Much better than the $95 per season I payed when they first came out. People in general don't blind buy Star Trek, if you are a fan they know you will buy.

I'm jonesing for the HD-DVD TOS remastered sets in the fall.

I think I'll wait a few years and get the HD versions of all the shows. I've got the Complete DS9 to tide me over.
