I think I'll wait a few years and get the HD versions of all the shows. I've got the Complete DS9 to tide me over.

All of the visual effects were done for SD. AFAIK, they wouldn't be able to be scaled up to HD without completely re-doing all of them.

...Which doesn't mean that they won't redo them. They're redoing all the special effects for TOS, so it stands to reason that they eventually will for TNG, DS9 and Voyager as well. The live action footage was shot on 35mm film so it can benefit from HD as much as any movie, etc.
