I really enjoyed the last two lps from these guys and this new one is eagerly awaited. Will be interesting to hear the influence of new member Johnny Marr.

Haha, weird, I just clicked on the link at Pitchfork to read this! I love Modest Mouse, and I'm reallllly excited for this. If they tour anywhere near me it'll make the month, whatever month the show will be in, that is. Yippee. Here's the other info they posted:
"According to Billboard.com and verified by a publicist, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank-- boasting guitar-work from new recruit Johnny Marr, guest appearances from the Shins' James Mercer, and that sunny first single "Dashboard"-- hits stores via Epic on March 20. It has 14 tracks, including the not-so-smartly-titled "Steam Engenius".
The digitally-inclined may preorder We Were Dead from iTunes beginning January 30, thereby ensuring themselves access to a "Dashboard" download and some swank behind-the-scenes video shoot footage. Actually we have no idea if it's truly swank, we just like saying swank a lot. Swank? Swank. We hope it's more than this, though.
Modest Mouse will hop in their humble tour stretch-Hummers this spring for a presumably long-ass TBA jaunt in support of their new collection of songs, including previously reported stops at the ATP vs. the Fans festival and Barcelona's Primavera Sound. "

CD is leaked, and so far I am really digging it. What I didn't know was that Johnny Marr (Smiths) is now a member of Modest Mouse.
And yes, if you get a chance to see them live GO!

Got my ticket for the March 15th show here at the Crystal Ballroom. It'll be interesting going to see them without hearing their new stuff, since the cd comes out the week after.

The leaked album has tracks in reverse order, at least the one I saw.
And I have listened to the disk about 5x now. Has grown on me each listen. I am really liking it.

Is Marr playing air guitar on this recording? I guess it's good in a sense that he doesn't overwhelm what MM stands for, but I don't really hear any obvious influence at all. I feel like I should enjoy this band, but it's not doing much for me.

Downloaded it today and liked it a lot on the first listen.
Kind of suprised by the negative reaction here.
It sounds more like their old albums (I'd say most like The Lonesome Crowded West if forced to pick which is most resembled) IMO and many fans greatly prefer their old sound.
There weren't any songs I didn't like and a few that stood out as well (though I wasn't paying attention to titles/track numbers to list them).

it's over 1 hour of hookless bore, and i'm way disappointed. shit, i'd even listen to "sad sappy sucker" over this one.

I agree the guitar is a bit different and it's more polished, but the sound is closer to Lonesome Crowded West than Good News IMO. With closer used loosely. Its just a bit less polished and poppy that Good News and as such a bit more disjointed and raw which reminds me of their older stuff more than their past couple of albums.
I don't think its hookless or boring though.

I've given it probably 5 listens, I definitely dig it. Probably like either Parting of the Sensory or Spitting Venom best, but Education, People as Places, Steam Ingenious and Invisible are all damn good too.
Really no bad songs on the album for me, though the first 3 or 4 are a bit weaker than the ones I listed above.

I was a bit worried after reading all the negativity on it, and after hearing Dashboard, but I gave it a listen and think its good so far. Still don't care for Dashboard though.

LOL. This album has more hooks then any of their past albums. This IS MM's pop album. "Dashboard", "Fire it up", "Missed the boat, "Florida". How can people not get the hooks in these songs?!
