Isn't it already a Collector's Edition? Maybe it's just a Price Reduction.

Man does this gem get better with age, this movie just haunts you regardless of your sexual orientation (I am a heterosexual). It's just like fine wine, this is a classic film IMO. So a new edition would be great because they could probably improve the transfer from the CE a bit.

This might indeed be a new edition as they list the retail price of this DVD as $26.95. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is a special edition as the current DVD is very light on the extras and a far cry from being called a "Collector's Edition".

I saw it in the theater before the Oscars and really liked it. Beautifully made film. (And yes I'm a straight dude).

Been meaning to watch it again in the HT. This would definitely be a nice one for HD-DVD.

I guess since Focus doesn't have anything for this year's Dog and Pony Show (coughcoughOscarscough), they finally decided to do justice on Brokeback. Too bad they had to piss up Brick, though.

Here's to hopin for an Ang commentary, Maker Makes video, and the trailer.

That's what Heath Ledger said during his audition.

Damnit, I *knew* the studio was gonna double-dip on this movie, but I wanted it bad enough to buy the "bare-bones" edition in April! Fortunately, since I'm an A/V guy when it comes to DVDs, I'll only pick up a new disc if the extras are really top-notch.

Wouldn't that mean that you'd also pick this up if the audio or video quality was better on the newer release too? I would think A/V guys would be more concerned with the quality of the movie, not the extras.

Am I reading your post wrong or something?

JLyon1515, I apologize for my confusing post. It's my fault. What I meant is that since I really only care about video/audio, the extra features on the new release would have to be *really* good for me to double-dip. Unless, of course, the A/V has also been enhanced, in which case I will certainly pick up the new edition.

I seriously doubt that they would bother with better A/V quality after less than a year. Maybe it would get a DTS track but that's it.

FWIW, the current disc is not referred to as a collector's edition anywhere on the packaging. It has a "Four Star Collection" banner, but there aren't many extras on the disc. They may do like they did with Eternal Sunshine: package the same first disc with an additional disc of extras.

I'll definitely buy the HD-DVD (which I think is on the way if they're releasing a CE). That will certainly have better A/V quality.

I had a brain fart on my last post and referred to the FSC as the CE of the film. Duh. Yeah, improvements can be made but not by much as IMO the video transfer was excellent for the FSC release. The focus of this upcoming CE by the studios has to be in the extras department obviously, because if not many people will not double-dip. I would like to see extras on it about the films controversey, the Oscar loss for BP reflection which seemed odd, international trailers to see how other countrys marketed the movie. Also a 3-disc set with the soundtrack would be even better. Though, truth is the better video quality will no doubt come in form of the HD-DVD whenever it sees a street date. If the video quality on the DVD is improved, only slight improvements probably can be made.

From Universal's Website:

Winner of three Academy Awards', including Best Director, the movie that became a cultural phenomenon is now available in a remarkable 2-Disc Collector's Edition. Relive the sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men (Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal), a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. With all-new bonus features, never-before-seen footage and highly collectible postcards, this definitive set magnifies the emotion, drama and power of one of cinema's most groundbreaking films.

Collectable postcards? I'm IN!!

Glad to see a CE has been officially announced at last... But I doubt they'll do the kind of documentary that would really do it justice--you could do an impressive full-length docu just on the post-release cultural impact alone, and that's not counting the "making of"... But I'll be glad for whatever extras they come up with...

If I went ahead and bought the Crash DC and I love this film more, count me in for sure! on the double-dip. Sounds great! and those postcards are a great idea from Universal. Also DTS is sweet because I love the sound of the film with the beautiful acoustics from the score.
