Is the running time for the new ep 60 mins or does it require some padding (on either end)?

according to my dvr, it should end at 10pm, but you might want to pad if your interested in the previews for next week.

I checked my DVR and its saying that they are 1-hour each. No padding is being done.

I haven't checked my TIVO yet, but someone else here at work said their DVR was all screwed up for tonight's episodes, seeing the first hour and 65 minutes, thus preventing the 9:00 recording from starting. Better to be safe and double check everyone

I'm curious, can anybody remember a longer planned hiatus for a popular series? I haven't missed an episode of Lost, but I think I need to watch the recap episode just in case.

This sort of break happens all the time, it's just the reality of scheduling 20-some episodes in a 35 week season. Commander in Chief, for example, just had the exact same hiatus as Lost. In previous years, Smallville has had breaks from Dec 1-Jan 26, and Nov 19-Jan 14.

I actually prefer this type of long break from the show to many smaller ones, i think Lost is on for many weeks straight now.

Damn, I've never seen Smallville but that's a freaking long time. I think it surprised me more that this still remains one of the 'it' shows on TV, it's covered all over the entertainment shows and magazines, but still took almost a month and a half off. I think it's still rated in the top ten (first run eps at least), it still seems like a bit of a risk to have it off that long.

Pretty much every show will take breaks over the holidays, the difference being that Lost tends to end so many episodes with cliffhangers and unresolved questions, we just miss it more.

This excruciating hiatus is the perfect example of why 24's scheduling rocks so much.

Instead of going 42 days without an episode, forgetting what happened, and just getting genuinely disinterested...you get the entire season without interruption.

And is there anything better than 4 HOURS of Jack Bauer over 2 nights?!?!?

Yeah, and what's sad is that other countries have done it that way for some time. The "irregular" seasons make television so much easier to deal with. I'm guessing the reason they don't do it that way here is because of sweeps months.

I'm actually considering watching Season 3 all in one shot via DVD.

I watched Season 1 that way and loved it -- got through the entire season in about a week or so. I'm enjoying Season 2 much less... mainly because of the gaps between episodes. (Plus the fact that my DVR ate the "What Kate Did" ep, and I had to aquire it through... alternate means.)

I don't know if I'm going to be able to handle waiting that long (presumably, September 2007) before watching Season 3. But I think it's a much better way to experience the show.

I think status quo is why it is done this way. I would prefer a Sci-Fi/USA mid season split or a FX/HBO style all at once style season opposed to the current on/off/on/off/off/on style most shows are on now.
