I recently saw Bill Cosby live at MTSU and have picked up an interest in comedy albums. I am looking for some good comedy albums to listen to.

I have to agree and say Dane Cook. It'd be good to get into him now becuase he's got a new one on the way.

You're apparently a Cosby fan, so I wanted to point out you're missing Wonderfulness, Revenge, and another I believe just titled Bill Cosby. The cover of that last one is almost like a Beatles "Help" layout, with Bill doing several different faces onstage, and I think I remember the tracks being mostly sports related.

Yeah I am a big Cosby fan. I had third row seats when I saw him live and I laughed so hard that my throat hurt. Is there anywhere where there is a list of his albums as they came out?

All I did was type in "bill cosby discography" to a search engine, and several things came up. Unfortunately, none of them seemed very comprehensive, and the only place I found that third album I mentioned was eBay (and of course, my record case).

That will be the first Carlin experience. I bought it just for Filthy Words I heard it in my Honors Mass Media Law class and thought that it was pretty funny. We were studying obscenity and this album came up in a court case. Our instructor played Filthy Words for us so we could examine it for ourselves. I will probably also buy Class Clown for Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television. Our instructor also played that in class.

Denis Leary - No Cure for Cancer

Funniest things I've ever heard, and the spoof songs "Asshole" and "The Traditional Irish Folk Song" are classics.

If you like Larry the Cable guy you really can't go wrong with Jeff Foxworthy. I think he gets a bad rap b/c of the whole redneck explosion but that is only 5 minutes of the show. The rest is great.

Also along these lines, John Fox. This guy is out there. Not sure how to explain it.

Is Mitch Headberg's (RIP, btw) CD really that good? I know he had such a stage presence, not sure if it would be the same not seeing him.

Wow...I can't believe I'm the first to say...Bill Hicks (also RIP)!

Some say Leary stole Hicks act of smoking/leather jacket stuff (I don't agree with it). Hicks was absolutely incredible from the stuff I've heard, and he was so dead on with Bush/Iraq '91 that hearing the routine now it seems equally accurate, despite being more than a decade later. I think the most complete one-take recording (as opposed to compilations) is "Flying Saucer Tour - Vol. 1". If I recall correctly, it only lacks a closing routine, as the tape that was recording him ran out. Beware Hicks' on stage fantasizing of....well...."it's like a wisp of cotton candy framing a papercut."

In keeping with Bill Cosby recommendations, the only album of his that I've owned was "Himself" which amused me to no end. "Dad is great...give us the chocolate cake!"

Just about anything George Carlin is great, but some complain that in his later years/albums that he's become rather angry and bitter. Maybe, maybe not...it's still funny stuff to me.

I also enjoyed Sam Kinison (yet ANOTHER RIP). Some amazing stuff. The latest I'm starting to get into is Eddie Izzard, a british(?) comedian who dresses in semi-drag. It's a bizarre visual, but it seems like he's dressing rather futuristic, as opposed to coming out in a dress. I wish I could remember how he separates drag queens from transvestites. I THINK it's that drag queens are gay and that transvestites just enjoy dressing up, but are still straight. Maybe it's the other way around...

Eddie Izzard, the ultimate executive transvestite. He talks about different types of transvestites (straight men who like to wear makeup and women's clothes) - and his description of an executive/action transvestite is classic. Running, jumping, climbing trees...and putting on makeup while you're up there. I love all of his comedy routines, but have only seen his shows on dvd, so I don't know how it would translate to cd. Half of what I find so funny is the expression he has while delivering the lines, so again, I don't know if it would translate well onto cd.

Bill Cosby as Himself is a routine I've heard probably 100 times in my life, and I still roar with laughter every time. Eddie Murphy cracks me up as well, but I've only seen his shows Raw and Delirious, so part of the funny might be lost without the visuals.

WarriorPrincess: that's true...I hadn't thought of his visual display when telling the jokes (mannerisms and whatnot)...that does push the joke further along. I was merely thinking of the fact that he was in "drag", which I figure didn't matter much in translating from visual to audio.

Another for "Flying Saucer" Bill Hicks. One I haven't seen mentioned yet, if you can even still find it, is "I Have A Pony" by Steven Wright. Wonderful album.
