Borders 40% off any DVD boxset

Got an email from Borders:

40% off any DVD boxset - only valid on Friday the 8th.

http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/coupondvd40_1207.htm

Not sure if it can combine with the 10 off of 35 coupon found in the other thread:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=485719

Probably not, but who knows, they are both valid on the 8th.

Wow...for once that's actually a pretty good deal coming from Borders. Thanks a lot!

Yeah, if this can be used on the SNL Season 1 set that's pretty good. But what counts as a boxset? I would assume tv show seasons count as boxsets. It doesn't really specify.

EDIT: oh wait. it's off the list price, which would put it at 42 instead of 36. 42 is still good, though I could get it for like a buck less at Costco.

Glad I held off using my holiday savings reward money. Looks like it's time to cash it in with this coupon.

The other coupon reads "May not be combined with other coupons" so it doesn't look like you can stack. But it can be used with Holiday Rewards and/or personal shopping day.

Yes, I also wonder how they definate what is a Box Set?

The only think I really want for now is the new Criterion Seven Samurai. Will that count as box-set?
(they locked it in the display case with other box set.)

Borders.com is not Borders, so yes, you're right. Instore only. Of course, it does say "valid only in U.S. stores" on there

Unfortunately the one or two other times we've had that as a stipulation, it is not terribly clear.
The easiest way to be sure is to look at the sticker we put on the item, and underneath the "author" (to the left, immediately beneath the barcode) there is an 8 digit number, followed by 2 letters.

Normal DVDs are "DV" but a box set would be "DB"
That's a definite way to be sure.

If they're allowing anything beyond that, I've no idea...but that's your best bet, since I imagine the coupon is programmed to look for that category code.
I know TV seasons almost always count.

So, that's the best I've got right now.

EDIT: I just took a look at one of my own stickered DVDs to double check and I'd forgotten about the changes made to the multimedia stickers. They no longer list category codes.
However, this is the Oldboy SE, and it is titled (underneath "BORDERS" in the top left of the sticker) "OLDBOY - SE - BOX SET"
A fair number of releases will specify this if they're recent enough...

I just visited borders store. Almost all dvd boxes have max prices, so we will be getting 40% on maxed price. The 29.99 box set at borders is sold for 16.xx at amazon/ddd. Any recommendations that could give us better value for money?

I recommend movie boxes over tv seasons (eg Ultimate Superman) or the BIG boxes (complete series) or British TV (eg Red Dwarf, python, etc) some new releases (SNL ssn1) some movies that are counted solo as box sets (eg Oldboy).

Obviously the best way to maximize this is if you have a personal shopping day...

Do you think this coupon can be used with a box set of Dualdiscs?

One thing I recommend are the Lord of the Rings DVD Giftsets which are marked for $29.99. With the 40% off it comes down to $17.99 each.

The only problem I see with the sale is what Borders and its employees considers a box set to be. I predict many arguments with clueless clerks that will result more "I hate Borders" posts.

You might want to order from DVDPlanet using the Google Checkout promotion. $32.47 - $10 (off any $30 GC purchase) = $22.47 shipped free.
The only problem is they are currently out of stock but the promotion is supposed to last till the end of Dec.

One good buy is Animaniacs V2, $44.99 - 40% = $26.99 which is a few bucks cheaper than most retailers. . . though B&N is even better with the 25% off coupon tacked onto a member's discount ($23.38). But then you drop below the $25 free shipping cutoff.

new criterion of seven samurai is DEFINITELY a box set.

And I was right, it is coded to look for DB, unfortunately you will only be able to find this out from employees.

It is DVDs ONLY (so dualdiscs will not count, since they're generally considered music primarily--out of curiosity, are you thinking of the talking heads box? man that thing is tempting...) so that means anything that's (correctly shelved) with DVDs.

And the register should automatically tell if it's a DB or not...

guess we'll see, eh?

Will the register automatically subtract the 40% first and then subtract the Holiday Savings Rewards balance?

40% is off the item.
Transaction discounts (Personal Shopping Days, HSR, $/% off transaction coupons) are taken *AFTER* that.

So, yes, the coupon will automatically remove 40% from the price, then any HSR applied (it is NOT automatically applied. If you want to use it, you need to say so) will be applied to the discounted price.
