Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

Kagemusha - I know you're loved by many but your use of synthesizer music is simply awful. It literally sounds like it was lifted from Deathstalker 3 and other DTV fantasy films of the 80s and 90s....

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I got an email earlier today from criterion about a $10 credit for them hitting 300,000 facebook likes. I just had to wait a few hours for the site to stop being slammed before I could get logged in.

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I just finished the last Zatoichi movie of the set. I ended up liking them a lot more than I imagined. There were multiple days I'd watch 2 or 3 of them back to back and I didn't get burned out at...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

If anyone's looking for something new, try the Apu trilogy.

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I'm having more fun watching Zatoichi than I planned on. I can tell because I don't mind watching subs at night, which can put me to sleep if the film isn't keeping me interested the entire time. I...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

Count me in the same group. The only episode that I remotely liked was something like the second to the last episode.

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I watched Genocide last night. I'll probably ditch this set. As with the others, it had a decent enough idea but then slowly went bad towards the end.

So a movie about venomous insects that upon...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I don't remember a silhouette from the TV version but they sure showed the face of the accused in the movie long enough.

I didn't like how the last holdout in the TV version finally changed. I...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I'd say I slightly prefer the TV play. I liked the juror that was the equivalent to Fonda slightly better. Even being 30 minutes shorter than the movie, I don't feel like I missed anything the movie...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

Skipped Genocide last night because I was too tired for subtitles, so I went with 12 Angry Men. Watched the tv play first and then did the movie.

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I don't mind faking the igloo for space but having them dress and act ignorant of certain technologies that they have already been using starts to cross a line for me, especially when it's the...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

Did you know that a lot of the scenes were staged?

I watched The Living Skeleton last night. It started out as a decent enough Japanese ghost story but for me, it fell apart at the end.

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

Completely off topic, I watched Silent Night, Deadly night last year and in the supplements, it talked about how upset people were that the movie ruined santa for kids by making him a killer. One of...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

I liked Red River. It's not fancy but when I would go to watch a few minutes just to kill some time, I'd end up not stopping it.

I'm watching some of the supplemental material for White Dog and...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

The main thing that turns me off about him, as well as many indie films, is the pattern of slow burn just to have a big payoff at the end that involves something sexual and/or really violent. A lot...

Re: 7th Annual Criterion Challenge - Discussion Thread

He's one of those directors I could never get into and can see his techniques (which endlessly annoy me) in his films and figure out it's him before looking it up to make sure. Ingmar Bergman is...

I'm going to start tonight with Red River because it's the last criterion I bought and it's still sitting next to the tv. After that, I have to venture into my theater room to look for stuff. I keep...

Jason and the Argonauts and Robocop use stop motion animation.

The Brakhage collection has hours of stuff.
