I have my settings to auto sign-in as well although it doesn't always do so. I forget where the option is now on the NXE dashboard but it is there someplace -- I verified that it was still set...

Back on the OG Xbox there was no Silver or Gold membership levels. Since you only deleted the GamerTAG and didn't call MS to cancel it should have remained active. What kind of billing were you on...
