Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I think Barnes & Noble counts as a national retailer, unless you were referring specifically to department store chains.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Surely it's been longer than that? I can't even remember the last time it wasn't pointing down.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Behind the Candelabra was an HBO original. It only had a limited theatrical release to festivals and the UK market.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I don't recall Disney withholding anything from Laserdisc, aside from Song of the South (which actually did get a couple of LD releases in Asia).

As TheBang says, the only reason DIVX...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The studios prefer to keep consumers hooked to an ongoing monthly streaming subscription rather than a one-time point of sale purchase.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Letterboxing was a standard feature on Laserdisc by the early '90s.That was one of the selling points to distinguish the format from VHS.

My first LD player was an entry-level Pioneer...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Yeah, the average movie-only, CLV edition Laserdisc sold for about $34.99 to $39.99, except for Fox Titles, which were often absurdly priced at $59.98 for some reason. Once you start adding bonus...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

As a SteelBook collector, I still regularly shop at Best Buy, though I typically order online for curbside or in-store pickup. That's a better option than shipping, as Best Buy will ship SteelBooks...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I've been watching the '80s G.I. Joe cartoon with my son. Until recently, all four seasons (the two from Sunbow and the two from DIC) were streaming free with ads on Tubi. Just as we finished the...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The traditional, pre-pandemic rule of thumb was that a movie had to gross 2.5x its production budget to break even, in order to recoup marketing and distribution expenses, not to mention all the...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

A counterpoint to this may be the fact that Netflix is reducing the video quality of its streaming in Europe to reduce strain on the internet infrastructure. If the same thing happens here, and the...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Disney+ has an inherent problem in that it's focused exclusively on Disney and its holdings. Disney has a huge catalog, and it's fun to dig through it right now, but once Disney and Fox content...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The 3-D Film Archive does quite a number of restorations of vintage 3D movies, which have been released through Kino, Mill Creek, and other distributors.

The image of theater audiences wearing...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

What would that accomplish at this point? Physical media sales as a whole are rapidly declining. DVD and Blu-ray are no longer competitors to each other. They're both fighting together against...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Jurassic World 2 was released 9/18/18. The biggest release the same time last year (9/17/17) was Wonder Woman.

So, yeah, pretty big.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The OPPO 203 offers features that no other UHD/Blu-ray players in its price range do, including an HDMI input for full scaling and video calibration control of external sources (even 4k). It also has...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

The OPPO 103 had streaming apps including Netflix and VUDU. The 203 did not because licensing negotiations were slowing down release of the player and the company decided to move forward without them.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

That's perhaps true if you only use streaming to rent movies. However, growing numbers of people now try to collect movies exclusively through streaming means as well.

First, what does it...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

Hardly anybody uses 480 masters on Blu-ray, except in cases where the material originated in standard-def.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I don't think I agree. Although Sony started making HD transfers back in the mid-'90s, the studio also had a policy of liberally applying Edge Enhancement to all its masters until 2007 (the second...

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

I thought the consensus opinion was that the Oblivion Blu-ray looks better than the UHD.

Re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

You're dreaming, man. Just because a store shelf can hold 10 copies doesn't mean it will sell 10 copies... or any, even with a holiday promotion.

That disc was released in 2001, at the height...
