In such situations, I'll keep an old CD or DVD that doesn't work as a placeholder until I replace it. If I buy a used copy, then I'll still have my original cases and inserts. I keep my stuff in...

If the discs will play on one player and not the other, could it be a hardware issue?

Either way, HD-DVD sounds like it was a shit format, and we're fortunate it lost the format war.
