Subwoofer Crossover??

Can someone explain in plain english what the "Crossover" knob (50Hz -> 150Hz) on the back of my subwoofer does? And also the "Phase" switch (options are o and 180).

OK... Newbee question: Which is better, Digital Optical or Digital Coaxial? The way i see it, 1's and 0's being transmitted are 1's and 0's on the other end despite the medium.
