I think one of the problems is that it was put on the books as "for retainer" when there was in fact no retainer. That's cooking the books. If trump knew there was no retainer, then he is an accomplice to that.

So they really think that Cohen went rogue and (for instance) on his own paid off Stormy, without Trump's knowledge at all, etc. etc.? I mean I doubt the Republican representatives actually believe that, seeing as how they didn't ask a single thing about Trump in the entire hearing, but do people actually believe that?

There was no signed retainer, nor any contract. Cohen pays Stormy Lawyer, Trump pays Cohen nearly identical amount. It's a stretch to think Cohen would use a home equity loan, just to "save" the president, without the president knowing or approving.

STRETCH

Whether or not it is a stretch, if Trump was truthful in answering any of Mueller's questions related to the payoffs, then it really isn't a big deal. Breaking campaign finance laws usually result in a token fine. Lying under oath about it is a different matter.

On their own, probably not. But then there's this email:

"The box also contained an e-mail with Trump Organization C.F.O. Allen Weisselberg, whose name came up almost as often as Trump’s in the House hearing on Wednesday. The exchange had to do with how Cohen would be reimbursed for the $130,000 payment he made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels,11 days before the election, in order to keep her from going public with allegations of an affair with Trump."

The question is, does that email specifically mention "reimbursed for the $130,000 payment he made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels", or is it just a generic "we owe Cohen $$$ and this is how we'll pay him back" with no details.

Oh, I know. I wonder if he knows, or if he's just mindlessly parroting bullshit as usual.

Edit: I don't actually wonder.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's the latter. As Cohen mentioned a few times, lots of that kind of stuff was never written down. Donny doesn't use email or text messages (which makes his Twitter obsession all the more perplexing in a way...) and I don't think Weisselberg is dumb enough to let a document explicitly stating that kind of thing to exist. Just from Cohen's account alone, it seems like he was getting played by Weisselberg the whole time, always kept at just enough distance to be useful. I guess time will tell.

Not to give too much praise to AOC, but it felt like she was one of the few who managed to get some new leads out of Cohen's testimony, so hopefully those turn into something of value to the investigation.

Look. If you (generic "you" to all it applies, not just you personally) want to engage in a tit-for-tat with certain people on the forum, do it. But this taking a dig and then backslapping among yourselves is petty. I thought we were better than this. I'm beginning to think I was mistaken.

I'm not linking to it on Amazon, but this looks like one of those garbage-tier "print out something that will be (partially) in the public record and put some 'original' 'Content' in there in order to sell it to morons." type of things.

I'm shocked Dershowitz would be involved in this. Truly shocked...

Pretty sure it's fraudulent to sell a document that doesn't exist, may never exist and you have no rights to even if it ever does. Figures Dershowitz would be involved in something like this.

Cohen specifically said they wrote him checks; first from Donald's personal account, then from the trust.
He later mentioned that Weiselberg (sp?) specifically instructed him to write up an invoice for "services rendered" or a retainer or whatever it was, for a 12 month period, so he did.

So look at this from an outsider's view:
- Cohen issued an invoice to Donald for 12 installments of $35k.
- Donald paid Cohen, per that invoice.
- it's safe to assume the invoice says nothing about the true reason for the payments, as that would defeat the purpose of covering it up.

So what you have is a lawyer issuing an invoice to a client for a set of payments over a set term, and the client fulfilled those payments.

I hate to say it, but IMO (and I ain't a lawyer), the existence of the checks and the invoice (if made available) aren't actually enough to help Cohen's version of the story at all. In fact, they help Donald's case that he just paid him per the invoice he received.

The charity / portrait story may have more meat to it, but this one... I'm thinking it backfires on Cohen, or at the very least, amounts to nothing at all.
You're arguing that federal prosecutors don't actually have the evidence for their assertions in Michael Cohen's plea agreement. You're out on a limb. Do you really think they would assert that the PRESIDENT directed felony violations of campaign finance law if they couldn't back up that assertion? I am not a lawyer, but to the best of my knowledge, federal prosecutors do not have to outline ALL of their evidence in a plea agreement. They have to outline enough evidence to warrant the charges against the individual -- in this case, Michael Cohen, not Donald Trump.

The bottom line is that we don't know the full scope of physical evidence and witness testimony that implicates Trump. For example, the CFO was given immunity with regard to the case. What did he tell the federal prosecutors? We don't know. There are other witnesses.

The publicly available information may not make an iron-clad case against Trump, but everything points to the conclusion that Trump was knowingly involved.

Remember the "prop?" She was shopping a tv series.

Trump official Lynne Patton confirms she sought ethics guidance on appearing in a TV series

"This is not about money," Patton wrote in her online post. "I could make 10 times the amount writing a book about a fraction of what I know. This is about me honoring my commitment to the American people. If producers are truly interested, they’ll figure out a way to make it work without me having to compromise my own principled mission.”
