Not that I particularly like to defend Trump on things but he's not wrong about earnings. Most companies have released good earnings this season. His tweet probably had to do with United Technologies Corp that blew out earnings yesterday. Alas, good earnings don't always drive the entirety of the market, which is why there was a drop in the Dow overall.

Having said that:

1 - Earnings have been covered by the media as much as they always have. There is nothing special about this earning seasons compared to any other.

2 - Earnings news should always take a backseat to people not getting paid due to a government shut down.

And to your bigger point - yeah, don't brag about the stock market. Period. 2018 was a bad year for stocks.

From what I understand, it's part of being hired at the possibility of a furlough situation (historically, it's never been this long and few have ever missed an actual paycheck--let alone two). On furlough, a fed employee is still active, and is still required to show up for work. They still have to perform their duties just as if they were getting paid. Additionally, paid leave and excessive sick calls are looked at more closely, etc., and unfortunately, for many who had leave in the month of January, the leave was cancelled (normally leave cannot be cancelled because it's solidified in "bidding" for it and if you win that "bid" time, it is yours).

The FAA is grounding all flights in and out of LaGuardia. WaPo is reporting that at least 14,000 IRS employees didn't show up for work today. We may be nearing a breaking point.

Breaking point of what? You think Trump cares one bit about what's happening to American citizens? Shit could be burning down around him and he'd still demand the stupid wall while keeping everything shutdown.

He still thinks government workers are a bunch of lazy freeloaders. That's been the Republican line for decades.

He also thinks literally everyone in the government works directly for him and has to do his bidding.

No, but if there's no one around to process tax returns and if there aren't any planes in the air, our economy would screech to a grinding halt. That I do think he cares about. If Trump refuses to budge, I do think there's a stronger likelihood of Republican senators bothering to do their jobs instead of unquestionably catering to every whim of Trump's.

I wish I had that level of optimism about this situation.

Hmm, how could you testify AGAINST the president, unless you had some dirt on the president?

The problem is that the shutdown is rapidly becoming a national crisis.

Good point. Did he just offer up that statement or was he asked the question specifically? Otherwise he should have just said he was innocent of any wrong doing.

Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

800,000 government workers out of work and 2 missed paychecks seems like a national crisis to me. The severity of the crisis is growing rapidly.

Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

isn't that just postponing the conversation? He'll just shut down the government again when the "short term" period is over. Plus, I don't believe he'll give in until I see it.
