So if all these superhero movies are shit, why are certain types of people singling out THIS one for such vocal criticism?

You can use this stupid line of thinking for every single genre of film. "You think this horror movie is gonna show you one thing you haven't seen before"?

The only thing stupid are the audiences who keep coming back for these mediocre films.

I agree, other films are too complex for your average Trump supporter.

Re: The Random Political Memes Thread

Still unanswered is why some people have such venom toward the "mediocre films" with women in the lead roles, and relatively little for films of similar quality starring men.

There's more to the world than just the people you know:

The Rotten Tomatoes page of Captain Marvel is being trolled weeks before the film’s release, seemingly due to Brie Larson’s comments calling for more diversity in film criticism.

Larson, who plays the title character, recently spoke out about the “overwhelmingly white male” ratio of film journalist she’s spoken to at junkets over the past few years in an interview with Marie Claire.

Ever since, the film’s user rating – set by audience members – has plummeted. Having had an 97% rating a few weeks ago, its score at the time of writing is 63%.

Despite Captain Marvel not being released for another two weeks, male users have posted reviews taking aim at Larson’s words.

“Brie Larson has already said this isn’t for me, I’ll spend my money elsewhere,” one user writes, with another adding: “Search the lead actress. Doesn’t want us going as a white male. I won’t go. I hope your movie is good without me.”
https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-e...-a8787911.html

Once again, white male fragility rears its ugly head -- here's the exchange Brie Larson had with a reviewer that made a certain group of men decide they needed to start trashing her movie:

Q: I was thrilled you requested me to interview you. I thought, ‘This is game-changing’. It’s the biggest opportunity I’ve had. Nobody usually wants to take a chance on a disabled journalist. I’d love to know what your particular reasons were.

A: ‘About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male. So, I spoke to Dr Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that. Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive. After speaking with you, the film critic Valerie Complex and a few other women of colour, it sounded like across the board they weren’t getting the same opportunities as others. When I talked to the facilities that weren’t providing it, they all had different excuses.’

Re: The Random Political Memes Thread

Never a good idea to criticize the critics.

Sounds like a big nothing. No one is really outraged. Just press reporting about outrage. Like the lipstick color name thing.

Don't dish it out if you're afraid to get it likewise? What did they think was going happen? This movie should be renamed to Captain Obvious.

People do this all the time on social media, by commentary-bombing somebody they don't like or their commentary. That's why social media is so irrelevant, except for the people who thrive on being popular. My advice...shoulda waited with that commentary until the damn movie was out, and playing in theaters for a long time. Maybe next time, try it. Also, overwhelming white males watch these kinds of movies. What a moronic statement as if by making it, it would somehow change something. Well, I guess it did...the movie's popularity.

Yeah, she literally is just reaching out to include people who normally aren't given a chance. The fucking horror! I swear, it's stuff like this that makes me think it'd be better if the internet was never invented. All these shitty people would still exist, but at least we wouldn't know about it.

In other words, don't say "Hey, maybe people other than white men should have a voice" unless you want petulant man-children to throw a tantrum and lie about your movie.

I do agree that it was obvious this would happen, because the last decade has reminded us in ways both trivial (Gamergate/Comicsgate) and substantive (the Trump phenomenon) that there is a certain population of people -- predominantly white men -- who take delight in destroying anyone who tries to get a seat at the table.
