I hate hard hats for that reason. I'm tall, and I know without thinking if my head has enough clearance to avoid the beam. A low beam of 6'5" and I'm okay; 6'4" and I'll duck a half inch without even noticing and walk through. Those damn hats add two inches to my height, and I bump my head every time.

Then some fool says, "See! The hat protected your head!" No it didn't. It just got in my way.
