Nixon best president since FDR?

Let me say this, yes. His head was screwed on tighter than the guys prior to him since FDR, maybe Truman but he lost the game do to some corruption. I was viewing Stone's Nixon, especially the scene where he meets devil incarnate CIA director Richard Helms, having to handle this sonovabitch could only be done by a moralistic character like him. Let me say this also, dude was bomb and held all the cards stronger than any other president. In fact he parallels Lincoln in that he lost a lot but managed president anyway. Oh and watergate is positively limp dick.

Re: Nixon best president since FDR?

As far as the "Best", it could go either way. But he probably did and had more contribution than most know about and sad to say his name is only associated with on of the biggest scandals in the office of The President.

From the Nixon Wiki...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon

First President to conduct offical talks with China

The Vietnam War was going on and he ended US involvement in 1973

He was there during Apollo 11 with first man on the moon, approved a five year program with the USSR

He saw the first large scle of intergration of Blacks in public schools in the South.

He formed the Enviromental Protection Agency

The was the 1973 Oil Embargo Crisis due to the war between Egypt/ Syria with Israel.

There was the SALT 1 treaty with the USSR

"Nixon advocated a "New Federalism", which would devolve power to state and local elected officials, though Congress was hostile to these ideas and enacted few of them"

"In 1971, Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts proposed a plan for universal federally run health insurance, partly motivated by dramatic rises in public and private health care expenditures. In response, Nixon proposed a health care plan which would provide insurance for low-income families, and require that all employees be provided with health care. As this still would have left some forty million people uncovered, Kennedy and the other Democrats declined to support it, and the measure failed, though a Nixon proposal for increased use of health maintenance organizations passed Congress in 1973."

Re: Nixon best president since FDR?

The forum does not like to be confused with facts when our minds are already made up.

His principal drawback was his establishment of the EPA.

When you become a little more acquainted with the growth of federal agencies, and they power they have, you might not be so quick to make such as a asinine statement as above.

He was a fair-minded guy who wasn't afraid to do things that were unpopular if he thought they were right. And barring labor disputes, he was generally proven to be correct. He was constantly under appreciated both within his party and without, but made a lot of smart, sane decisions and didn't take crap from people. I like him better than FDR.

I also think pretty highly of Eisenhower. Nixon was a weasel but a decent president.

I like Nixon. I think he gets treated unfairly because of Watergate.

However, Nixon did add to the healthcare mess we're in now by pushing HMO's.

The problem with Truman is also he could be his greatness is of circumstance, a whole lot was going in the world after the biggest war ever just ended. I mean, fuck.

Re: Nixon best president since FDR?

So because a lot was going on that Truman handled pretty darn well (labor disputes being the biggest thorn in his side), it's not really his accomplishment because it was just circumstances?

I'll let you in on a little secret, everyone has to deal with a given set of circumstances. You, me, Truman, Clinton, Jefferson, Robespierre, everyone. It's how you act within that set of circumstances which matter. And, in general, I think Truman acted very well.

Truman signed off on the orders to drop two nuclear weapons on Japan, which over time mutated their women into regularly growing some pretty fabulous breasts: prior to this, the average Japanese woman's front looked like Gwen Stefani's back. I credit the whole Japan-as-modern-world-power based solely on this.

Question: How many Japanese were killed by our our fire-bombings of Toyko?

I guess i just hate his corruption. Plus i do like Nixon's personality. Both were fairly dry individuals but Nixon was probably the most intellectual president we've ever had, he could play piano, and knew history.

When you pull your head out of your ass, and recognize the massive power that giant corporations have over the average individual, and how many people they've poisoned, killed, mutated, given cancer to, and spurred serious diseases, without any serious or real consequences... maybe you'll realize how a government agency like the EPA grew to massive size.

I hate his corrupt dealings too, but he's was probably the last true moderate/centrist president we've had.

You're the one who needs to pull their head out of their ass.

The massive growth in the federal government is primarily due to the growth of federal agencies.

Congress is basically at fault. They shunned their responsiblity and allowed the federal agencies - many who perform the same job as other federal agencies - to grow in size without oversight from the congress - wasting billions of federal dollars.

This country got along reasonably well without the agencies and their intrusiveness into private property rights.

Re: Nixon best president since FDR?

I can believe you're both wrong, since you both usually are.

There have been numerous studies that demonstrate that between lives saved and new technologies, the EPA and associated regulations create wealth -- by orders of magnitude. As for intrusiveness into private property rights, since just about every environmental regulation can be described as "Property owner, you are no longer allowed to dump your trash onto the commons," I would argue that environmental regulation is pro-property not anti-.

And anybody who has ever seen pictures of the Cuyahoga River Fire might question whether we got along well without environmental regulation.

The word 'best' should never be used to describe a politician.
It's like asking "What is best : pancreatic cancer or lung cancer?"

Yeah, but they denied me really cool new mutant powers.

You know this country did just fine for 175 years without a nuclear deterrent strategy, and then all of a sudden nuclear weapons show up and you all think it's going to be the end of the world.
