What does the budget deficit mean to me?

Well, the tea party had a pretty successful run yesterday. A lot of grassroots regular folks who got candidates voted in on a message of fiscal responsibility.

Fiscal responsibility sounds great on paper. We're taking in more money than we're spending. Wonderful! But how does it truly affect the common man.

Looking back in my lifetime, the United States has always been in debt. And with the exception of four years, the country has always run with a budget deficit. During that time, there's been some good times and some bad times for me -- and I'm not sure that the budget of the federal government had anything to do with it.

Assuming the Republican-controlled house manages to create a budget surplus in 2011, what are the positive effects for Joe Sixpack?

Look not too far back in history - mid-1990s - and you can see the positive results.

When asked about which programs they would cut, none of the tea party candidates (save one) could name a single thing. Add in a steadfast refusal to raise taxes, and fiscal responsibility goes right out the window.

Good times indeed. But we didn't actually have a budget surplus until 1998.

Won't cut social programs or defense. So that leaves basically nothing. No, correction. The Repubs will save the country $150 million by cutting the National Endowment for the Arts.

We never had a real budget surplus - but go on.

"Wasteful spending." It's been mentioned again and again if you've been paying attention. I'm not sure why you're in favor of it.

Neither party will make real cuts in spending - cuts that would have a signficant impact.

Look at what's going on in Europe. That could be our future

Lawrence O'Donnell was apoplectic last night regarding the "debt ceiling" and how the Repubs may actually not raise it resulting in worldwide financial catastrophe. He also could not get any Repubs to address specifically this issue. Even Eric Cantor would not. Will the Repubs actually go this route or will they stall for time and raise it on a Friday night when all of the conservatives are either in bed or inebriated?

Yep.

And look at the steps the UK is taking. Unfortunately, we're too stupid to follow their lead.

Putting 400,000 people out of work with no jobs to take up the slack in the private sector? That certainly sounds wonderful for Joe Voter.

I doubt few if any of those 400,000 voted Tory (or LibDem.)

Well, maybe a few of them voted LibDem, but anybody that stupid deserves to be unemployed anyway.

At some point you have to bite the bullet.

How about ending the billions injected into Afghanistan and Iraq on a weekly basis. Fuck.

Lawrence O'Donnell doesn't know what he's talking about - which is not all that unusual.

The Repubs might threaten not to raise the debt ceiling; but, in the end, they wil raise it.

Yup. They might try to use it as leverage to get cuts from the Democrats though. But i'm guessing the democrats will call their bluff

Also, I understand that members of the new congress have promised to vote down pork for [other states], while getting [my state] earmarks. That certainly will make the budget manageable!

That's a good place to start.

That will also fail. People like pork - their pork - not pork for others.

I apologize if I sound skeptical about what great (or bad) changes the new House may bring; but, I've been around long enough and seen enough to be somewhat skeptical. Very little gets changed in Washington.

I know that in my state Scott Walker is going to create a smaller government AND add 250,000 jobs. They should try something like that in the UK.
