Will the NRA endorse Harry Reid?

I don't actually believe it but it is an interesting notion.

NRA Chief Lobbyist: We're "Absolutely" Concerned Schumer or Durbin Could Replace Reid as Majority Leader
NRA won't rule out endorsing Reid.

BY JOHN MCCORMACK
July 1, 2010 7:59 PM

Today, RedState.com's Erick Erickson wrote, "Multiple sources tell me the National Rifle Association is planning to endorse liberal Harry Reid against pro-gun champion Sharron Angle." The NRA's chief lobbyist, Chris Cox, told THE WEEKLY STANDARD this evening that the pro-gun rights group has not decided on an endorsement in the Nevada Senate race.

"Any discussion on endorsements at this stage are premature, and simply a distraction," said Cox. But he wouldn't rule out an NRA endorsement for Harry Reid--even though Reid will almost certainly vote in favor of confirming Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. The NRA released a letter today explaining why it opposes Kagan and would score how senators vote on her confirmation. But Cox said that "we look at the entirety of someoneís record" before making an endorsement.

The NRA is frightened by the possibility that Harry Reid would be replaced by an anti-gun Democrat as majority leader. "Truthfully, the two individuals vying for majority leader should Harry Reid lose are the two most rabidly anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment senators in Washington, Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin," Cox said. "Does that give concern to NRA members and gun owners all over America? Absolutely, it does."

But wouldn't the House be able to stop legislation the NRA opposes? "That's all hypothetical," Cox replied, adding that Durbin and Schumer have a "long history of supporting rabid anti-gun groups and their extreme gun control agendas. Anyone who discounts the role of a Senate majority leader Ö would do so at their own peril."

In Reid's case the NRA will have to weigh what he can do for its legislative agenda against his votes for Sotomayor and Kagan (and votes against some NRA-backed measures). The Supreme Court's 5-4 verdicts striking down gun bans in the District of Columbia and Chicago could easily be reversed if Obama gets to replace one of the justices who ruled against the bans.

Cox said the NRA's legislative priorities include "all sorts of things," such as making Washington, D.C. make gun ownership less burdensome, improving right-to-carry reciprocity, and gun-related issues "in almost every appropriations bill."

Cox dismissed the notion floated by RedState's Erick Erickson that a major reason the NRA would endorse Reid is because he secured a $61 million earmark for a gun range in Nevada. Still, Cox called the range "the most impressive shooting facility in the world" and acknowledged that "we gave Senator Reid credit along with other people from the delegation who worked to secure funding for that range."

Without calling out RedState by name, Cox lashed out at "one particular blog that seems to have a problem with defending positions that have proven to be false" for spreading the claim that the NRA is planning to endorse Reid. "The same blog threw out there that Ö I had put out a gag order on the members of our board of directors because I had cut a deal to be neutral on Elena Kagan based on the DISCLOSE Act. Well, first of all Ted Nugentís on our board. Anybody who thinks you could gag Ted Nugent doesnít know him. Itís outrageous. And it was a lie to suggest there was a gag on our board of directors."
Of course, if they decide that Sharron Angle doesn't have much chance of winning, that might help push them towards endorsing Harry as well.

Why endorse Reid?

The Repubs are most likely going to gain enough seats in the Senate for there to be gridlock and nothing of anything like gun control or any other controversial thing will get done.

In addition - even if Reid wins reelection he may very well be challenged for the ML position by either Durbin or Schumer or both.

The NRA endorses Democrats quite often. They are going to endorse the candidate who gives them the best chance to win their cause. If it is a tie they usually pick the incumbent.

Having said that, I agree with Cman, Reid may well not be majority leader even if he is reelected.

And things could very well shift back 2 or 4 years later and the vehemently anti-RKBA Democrat who replaces Reid will almost certainly still be in the party leadership role then.

You are confusing possibility and certainty. Yes, Reid may be challenged, but that is not a certainty. Yes, Reid may lose his ML position if he is challenged, but that is likewise not a certainty. If Angle wins, his being replaced is a certainty.

And the Repubs might gain in the majority in 2 or 4 years.

The NRA is not looking that far down the road. They are concerned with 2011.

That's a rather astounding assertion. The NRA, despite the occasional setback, has been a momumentally successful lobby for many decades now. Somehow I doubt they owe that success to being deliberately myopic.

Why is it an astounding assertion?

The NRA has had success during the past, but they've also had defeats - major defeats.

Your assertion that the NRA is not considering factors beyond the immediate election in their decision as to whom to endorse in the Nevada Senate race.

As has every organization that has been attempting to drive public policy for half as long as the NRA has. You can attempt to minimize their continued success and influence all you want, but that doesn't make my prior statement any less true.

I've been a life member of the NRA for about 50 years.

I'm well aware of their successes and their failures - probably considerably more than you are.

Congratulations. You're really reaching.

Your willingness to give the NRA a lot of money 50+ years ago has no bearing on whether or not it would be prudent for the NRA top endorse Reid. In fact, your ready dismissal of the idea would seem to contradict the comments of the NRA's chief lobbyist in the article I posted to start this thread.

It seems like, about once a week, I have to clean my monitor of soda unvoluntarily spit on it. This is one of those times, sir.

Little know fact....classicman2 was a founding member of The Musket Men, the pre-cursor to the NRA.
