Richard Dawkins: Arrest The Pope During UK Visit

Imagine if a school superintendent covered up his favorite teacher's repeated rape and abuse of students in the school because the reputation of the public school district was most important to consider. Imagine if the superintendent signed letters spelling out such policies? What if it was instead the leader of the Catholic Church?

Is the pope above the law? Judging by the smirking media, you'd think he was and that what he did is in some way acceptable.

Richard Dawkins: Arrest The Pope During UK Visit

Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, two of the world's most prominent atheist intellectuals, are seeking means to try the pope for crimes against humanity, their lawyers confirmed this weekend.

The pair are said to be working with British lawyers to see if the pope can be arrested for his part in the alleged cover-up of widespread sexual abuse in the Catholic Church during a visit to the United Kingdom in September.

The Vatican has suggested that the pope is immune to prosecution as he is a head of state - Dawkins and Hitchens suggest that he is not immune as the Vatican is not represented at the United Nations.

"I'm convinced we can get over the threshold of immunity," their lawyer Mark Stephens told The Guardian. "The Vatican is not recognized as a state in international law. People assume that it has existed for time immemorial but it was a construct of Mussolini, and when the Vatican first applied to become a member of the UN, the US said no. So as a sop they were given the status of permanent observers rather than full members."

Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, has confirmed he is seeking the pope's arrest, although he later denied reports he was planning to perform the arrest personally.

Last month Dawkins wrote a scathing article for the Washington Post in which he called the pope:

A leering old villain in a frock, who spent decades conspiring behind closed doors for the position he now holds; a man who believes he is infallible and acts the part; a man whose preaching of scientific falsehood is responsible for the deaths of countless AIDS victims in Africa; a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence.
Hitchens told the Sunday Times of London: "This man is not above or outside the law. The institutionalized concealment of child rape is a crime under any law and demands not private ceremonies of repentance or church-funded payoffs, but justice and punishment."

I'll wager $5 that it won't happen.

"The institutionalized concealment of child rape.."

I'm not knowledgeable enough about Ratzinger's specific actions or guilt, but it seems pretty hard to refute the above-quoted statement, and it seems to me that some of the higher-ups in the church should be facing some sort of criminal charges.

I am with Dawkins in that I would like to see the pope put behind bars. The years of rape and cover-up are vomit inducing. There are so many vile and evil actors here, it makes your head spin.

I used to have great respect for the pope. But as I've grown older and wiser I've learned that a title doesn't command respect - actions do. The actions of this pope are criminal and he should be put through a trial. It's time the world stood up to the title and, like everyone else, make him responsible for his actions and decisions.

Would you rathe this all just go away?

Just think about this. A priest in Oakland tied up two boys and molested them. He pleaded guilty and was convicted. The Oakland Archdiocese wanted to remove this pedophile from the priesthood. Cardinal Ratzinger, now The Pope, signed a letter which allowed the pedophile to continue as a priest for "the good of the universal church." He continued on as a priest and shortly thereafter he molested six more girls.

Because we really fucking hate pederasts.

But the Pope is a head of state. Britain can't just arrest him. They should declare war on the Vatican first.

Yes, it's better to ignore child rape and continue believing in an invisible man who lives in the clouds.

Some people absolutely need to be facing charges. That this went on for so long in the manner that it did is atrocious. People within the church need to step up and lead on making sure this type of thing can never happen again to such an extent.

You all need to stop with this "petty gossip and slander".

It's so clear what this pope is about... so obvious, a former(or active) pedophile is the head of the church. Anyone who brings up the lives of little boys being trashed in such a purely evil way is 'against God", or at best "against the church".

Sickening.

Re: Richard Dawkins: Arrest The Pope During UK Visit

So what we have here is some otter unity. Lots of folks that are usually on other sides of an issue has come together and agreed that action should be taken. This is a historic event.

Unfortunately nothing at all will happen

If it is, I will gladly take a load in he chin. I don't necessarily believe in hell, but since the Church did away with purgatory, not only would be a get out of hell free card, but a get into heaven free card and I am nothing if not strategic.

It's not often that atheists and I agree over the same things, but I'd be okay with this. Molesters deserve to be punished, and covering that up is sickening. This is about justice.
