Have things gotten too far out of hand?

As we get closer to the elections I am getting more and more disgusted with the political process. It seems to me that we, as Americans, have become too polarized in our political views. It is no longer a system of finding the best leaders, but a battle to see who is, "more correct than the other guy."

Both sides have produced mindless zombies only capable of throwing out zingers from the late night host or cable pundit that supports their side. Instead of focusing on issues, we focus on stupid things like whether someone looks good or if they are speaking the way the audience wants to be addressed. It seems to me that the whole process is being diluted to a meanless pissing contest. Regardless of the winner of the elections, we as the people of this country lose because of the sure dissention and opposition that the winner will face.

I came to realize my disgust this week when as I was watching Simpsons reruns on a FOX affiliate, I was bombarded with tons of political ads. There is so much negativity, false promises and out and out lies that one wonders if the commercial ad money would be better used in a bonfire. Even if one were able to dig through all bullshit in these ads and the presentations that come with them, we would still be left aimless; there just is any substance - only bullshit.

Also, my digust lies with the third party and its supporters - I suppose specifically the Green Party and Libertarians, since the eight other parties rarely seem to have any sort of support. My problem with third party people is that they claim to offer a solution, but actually offer a negation. There promises are that they will NOT do what the big two parties do, instead of stating something positive they will do themselves. And if they do, they end up sounding like that annoying aetheist friend you have. You know the one, when Sunday rolls around or you talk about religion they start singing platitudes about how they are no longer sheep and are now able to, "think for themselves." Yeah, well lot fucking good it does when all you do is go around bragging about how you think for yourself. Why don't you get off your high horse and try to make change? Oh yeah, that's right, making worthless points and citing apathy is much easier, isn't it?

I suppose I have gotten off track now, but I really wanted to get these feelings off my chest. So I'll just end this by saying that we should get people informed before we get them voting. Volunteer in local government and maybe even do some charity. I would only suggest running for an office if you don't care about what happens to your soul.

Well, I'm glad you could so eloquently wrap it up into a neat monosyllabic answer.

What is there to discuss? Nothing has changed, save for more media coverage.

One could say the campaigns have gotten quite a bit more negative...

I am fed up as well, but I know that uncontrollable hate spews from the Left and until that stops, then we might learn:

Ask me this question when the courts are done arguing over who will be the next president.

You think 2000 was bad? This year will be MUCH WORSE!! Massive voter fraud, lawyers throwing lawsuits around like frisbees, almost guaranteed problems with electronic voting, absentee ballots, provisionary ballots, blah blah blah.

Thank God the Democrats are pro gun control. That guarantees that we'll be better armed for the civil war.

That's what gun control is. The government may have guns, but you may not.

Lets save this thread and repost it in 2008. I suspect people will feel the same way then too.

This is one of the most bitter elections in recent history, probably because the race is so close. Have things gotten out of hand? I don't think so, but it surely is getting annoying especially living in a swing state. I can't even watch cartoons without Bush or Kerry popping up and telling me I'm going to die if I vote for the other candidate.

Only watching TV through TiVo time-shifting does wonders to "muffle" all these political ads too.

As does living in a state that has no need for the ads, like Illinois

I think it is far worse. All we here is why the other guys sucks. Day in and day out what is worse is it works so we will get more and more of it. Reality is all but gone. Just say something enough and it becomes fact to the base.

I don't think things have gotten out of hand at all - at least not with the candidates. It's their supports that have gotten out of hand by breaking into campaign offices, stealing yard signs, filling out phoney voter registration forms, etc. That's the crap that needs to stop.

yep, it HAS gotten worse. The fact that society overall has gotten coarser over time has masked just how bad it is.

There used to be lines of civility that wouldn't be crossed. But under the guise of "getting the truth out" those lines have been erased... the result.... not truth, but even more lies and deception.

There's so much crap flying around that it is impossible to determine what the truth is on any given matter... and I guess that is by design. Because if one can manufacturer their own truth, then they are "right". It's like having a license to print money.

All I have in response is

"Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?"

"Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!"

The more things change...
