Can anyone confirm this comment by Teresa Kerry

Heard on the radio yesterday that at a women's group speech on the campaign trail last week she stated that her husband would be proposing a national service thing where if someone gave two years of their life to public service they would get 4 years of college tuition paid for.

Now that would be a VERY expensive program....

Depends on where, of course. State schools are in the $x,000/year range.

Besides, this sounds like souped-up ROTC: instead of serving part-time for four+ years, the students serve full-time for two and then go to school full-time. Honestly, that might be an excellent improvement, since it allows students to concentrate full-time on classes (or whatever ) rather than serving for the military at the same time. I've always found that my GPA is much better, and I'm much happier, when I'm not distracted from school by work.

I heard John Edwards talking about this plan and he said that if their budget can't afford this program (and they CAN'T), that they would kill the program. This is probably just pre-election promising.

Politicians often offer proposals that might be popular with large segments of the public. The problem is that a great number of times these proposals can not be funded.

Example: John Kerry's health care proposal.
