Tonight: Super Blood Wolf Moon

Tonight’s celestial calendar brings us: Super Blood Wolf Moon!

No, it’s not a Chuck Norris movie ...

From Brianna Abbott at the Wall Street Journal:

Sunday’s Total Lunar Eclipse Will Be a ‘Super Blood Wolf Moon’

The only total lunar eclipse of the year will look larger than usual and have a reddish tint. Here’s how to watch.

Mark your calendars: The only total lunar eclipse of 2019 is set to happen Sunday night, with a little something extra.

As the full moon passes through the shadow of the Earth, a number of factors will combine to create a so-called “super blood wolf moon.” The eclipse will be visible from anywhere in the U.S. for 62 minutes on Sunday night, as well as South America and parts of Europe and Africa.

A total lunar eclipse is a relatively common event, with 70 to 80 occurring every century, according to Harvard University astronomy educator Patricia Udomprasert. Sunday’s eclipse is also a “super moon” because the moon will be at the closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger than usual. This combination happens roughly 20 times in a century.

The event will also create what some call a “blood moon,” a moon with a reddish tint. Because particles in the Earth’s atmosphere scatter blue light, only the remaining red light will reach the moon when the Earth blocks the sun. That red light will bounce off the moon, resulting in a coppery hue.

The name “wolf moon” just means a full moon in January, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Combining the terms together, some skygazers are calling the event a “super blood wolf moon,” though scientists still refer to the event as a total lunar eclipse.

The eclipse is completely safe to look at, says Dr. Udomprasert, and the date and time make it relatively easy for people to take notice. “What’s nice about this is that the next day is a holiday, so kids aren’t going to be in school,” said Dr. Udomprasert. “I’m planning to let my kids stay up so they can see it.”

The eclipse will begin at 9:36 p.m. Eastern time, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. At that time, the moon will move into the outer part of the Earth’s shadow and appear slightly dim for the next 57 minutes. Around 10:33 p.m. Eastern time, the moon will start to pass into the inner, darker part of the shadow, creating a partial eclipse. “It’ll look like a little bite was taken out if it,” said Patrick Hartigan, an astrophysicist at Rice University.

By 11:41 p.m. Eastern time, the moon will be completely enveloped by the Earth’s shadow and take on the reddish hue.

The total lunar eclipse will last until 12:43 a.m. Eastern time, when the moon will begin to gradually retreat out of the Earth’s inner shadow, and the eclipse will end at 2:48 a.m. Eastern time.

Cloudy weather may obstruct the view in some parts of the country. But astronomers are encouraging everyone who can to take an extra-long look at the moon on Sunday night. “People should bust out the old telescope, point it at the moon, and have some fun,” said Dr. Hartigan.

The next total lunar eclipse will be in May 2021.

Hopefully the clouds won't roll in tonight.

Never heard the "wolf" term before.

Since there's always a full moon in January, it seems odd to give it a special name.

I had never heard the “wolf” designation either. One thing is for sure, it will make UFO hunting more difficult tonight.

Clear here but it will be -4 °F by midnight, with windchill around -15 or -20 °F. Pretty rough moon watching except from a window.

Getting a good view here. I'd post a picture but it would be the same as all the other pictures of it

Re: Tonight: Super Blood Wolf Moon

Clouds dared to roll in!! But I caught a nice view between them - the moon was almost completely dark (still not red), showing what looked like a bright icecap (I know it's not an icecap; just using the term to describe it!)

Looks cool here. As an added bonus, we can see a bunch of stars out - something that we almost never see in Vegas.

Cloudy. There is a bright spot in the haze that I can see only if I look a little to the side.

Cool sight to behold. Skies were clear but temperatures in the single digits. As a result, I've lost feeling in a few single digits.

I think due to clouds will not able to see it. So, if you saw it then don't forget to share images (high pixel ones) with us here.
