YAJHT -- Using academic credentials: Proper or pretentious?

I have decided it is time to move on. I love my job, but I just don't mesh with the leadership style that has evolved over the last few years in the company. I had hoped it would pass, but there is no light at the end of the tunnel. My wife commented yesterday that I am not myself lately.

A few years ago I went back to school and earned my master's degree, but have had no luck moving into that field with my current employer. I have met with folks in HR and in the department, and was told I don't have any formal experience in the field and that is what they want.

My current question is this: when sending out my resume, is it proper or pretentious to use my academic credentials in conjunction with my name? It is very common to see this, but I feel a bit pretentious when I see it with my name. Maybe because it is not a common M.S. designation?

I did some Googling, but didn't come up with any real solid answers. DO I include it? Do I use periods?

Abob Teff, MSMOB

Abob Teff, M.S.M.O.B.

Thoughts? (And obligatory jokes ... I'll get this one out of the way now ... Abob Teff, PIHB.)

Unless it's a terminal degree in your field, don't use it--just list it under your education. If it IS considered a terminal degree (MFA, MLS, etc.), then by all means use it. I'm not sure if a MSMOB is a terminal degree; it's not a field with which I'm familiar.

^ 100% agree. In my opinion, usually a Master's degree is not high enough to list after your name. MBA may be an exception in some cases.

Master of Science in Management and Organizational Behavior

It’s the “softer side” of an MBA. It focuses more on organizational design and people. HR and training tend to get lumped in with it, but that’s not accurate. Continuous improvement, Lean, and leadership development are just a few of the more common things that are in the organizational development realm.

I will go with no too, since its not common enough for people to realize what it means. It would end up confusing more than anything

Definitely list it under your “Education” portion of the resume.

Agreed with others. List in Education but not with your name. I'd say use it with your name on LinkedIn since you want to give a good impression without someone clicking on your profile. But if your resume has it under education, no need to double list and have it with your name.

What Noonan and the others said. My wife has a Master's and through feedback, she dropped it from her name and just left it on the resume. The education section on your resume will do the talking for you.

It's OK to list your post count on DVDTalk. Put "Legend" after your name.

Just be sure to put "Esq." after your name and you'll be good.

Thank you all ... you confirmed my thoughts on the matter. The tip about Linked In was interesting though.

Wait a minute ... OP asked a serious question. Posters have thoughtful responses. OP agreed and thanked them. That’s not how this is supposed to work around here!!!

Only for Ph.D and even then it is uppity unless your career is in academia.

MDs, JD, MBA are usually exceptions.

I say leave the MSOB off... but put your Six Sigma belt level after your name.

You'd do well, probably, to just drop the 'M', but leave the 'SOB'.

Re: YAJHT -- Using academic credentials: Proper or pretentious?

I've worked on college campuses for over 20 years and know plenty of people with advanced degrees and none of them put their creds after their names (but you can bet their departments do on all marketing materials and such). None of PhDs I know use the Doctor honorific either and consider it bad form if one is not an MD.

This is perfectly acceptable IMHO.

I don't think it's pretentious at all.
