Ah, the 80s. A male could only get his left ear pierced, because if his right ear was pierced it meant he was gay. I remember that being a huge taboo when I was in junior high and high school... “Left is right, right is wrong.” I think there was a corollary rule that you could get your right ear pierced as long as you had more piercings in your left ear and still maintain your heterosexual credibility.

Painted Lady butterflies, Vanessa cardui were at record low numbers last year. The long Winter of rain this year has produced a huge number. The small relatives of Monarch butterflies are migrating from the deserts of Mexico to Oregon to mate. Yesterday the swarm was spotted all over Southern California. With dive conditions as bad as they are, I took some time for a little topside photography today.

Yeah I was in stop and go traffic head South on the 405 and there were butterflies passing by my car heading North the whole time. I honestly thought someone was releasing them from a car in front of me due to the numbers. It was surreal.

this is crazy nonsense... and totally what I remember hearing as well. Does anyone know where these "rules" actually originated from? Like a movie or something?

Not that I'm aware of... it was just part of the collective common wisdom.

My left earlobe was pierced - and your right it was just the side where you had it done.

I think it sprung from the pop music scene.

Howard Jones, Tears For Fears, etc had just the left. So it morphed into being “the rule”.

I remember the left/right ear piercing thing, it was so stupid. I wanted a nipple piercing but those weren't really popular (aside from punk rock) until the 90's when Kravitz and other celebs got them. Now, they are all the rage, especially for women.

They're not mating here in California.
Also, I didn't use a zoom, I moved the camera in slowly to not disturb the butterfly.

Yep I remember that. I still see older men like Harrison Ford and Morgan Freeman doing the one stud thing.
But that changed for younger folks. In the 90's I had BOTH ears pierced and i wore studs and hoops.

I remember the which side does he have a stud earing thing from the 70's. But it still may be older than that.

Re: XLIII Random Pic Thread, The Knights Who Say "Ni!" edition.

I used to get drunken frat boys who came into the store because they wanted their ear pierced, and they wanted me to do the "right" one. They were terribly insecure in their masculinity, and always had a couple of equally insecure friends. I'd tease them by acting dumb and asking what they meant. They'd always say "You know, the right one!" I'd make they spell it out, and I'd tell them, "Ah, okay. You want the left one. I can't tell just by looking at you!"

Most of them were okay with that. One or two got furious.

Yeah, I was kind of a prick when I was that age.

I remember that stupid earring thing. If a guy had both ears pierced, we thought it meant that he was bi.

Not many men had an ear piercing in the ‘70s, but if you say so. If you’re right then I’d wager it’s a gay thing. The gay community has always had “code”. This tucked in the right pocket vs. left pocket and stuff like that.

I’m not saying he didn’t have one in the right ear, but sometimes the image has been flipped.
