Getting Old Sucks
I'm 42. I've been eating eggplant since I was little. My Moms eggplant parm was awesome. I would eat it for days. The last couple of times though, I have noticed it's really been tearing the ass out of me. I was hoping it was just an illusion but I ordered an eggplant sub yesterday and oh boy. So now I'm thinking this will be last time I'm ever eating it as it's too much suffering. Should I go out with a bang and an ouch and finish the other half? What other kinds of getting old sucks can I expect going forward?

Anyone with memory problems should examine their sleep. I know as a sleep specialist I’m biased, but sleep really does affect people MUCH more than most realize. You need to be getting at least 7 hours of good sleep nightly, and don’t ignore shit like sleep apnea if you have that going on.
Oh, and one other thing that personally affected me... I’ve always had insomnia issues, and eventually melatonin quit working for me consistently. Ambien came with it’s own set of problems, so I settled on diphenhydramine as my primary OTC sleep aid for many years. This is the same thing as Benadryl, Unisom, and most generic store-brand sleep aids. It’s a first generation antihistamine but is used as a sleep aid since drowsiness is it’s most common side effect.
What I recently discovered is that diphenhydramine is HORRIBLE for you if you take it long term like I did. It affects memory and increases your chances of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia later in life. So I had to detox off that shit, and finally feel like my memory has improved, plus I’m a lot less groggy when waking up.
Anyway, sorry for the random tangent, but I thought it was pertinent to the theme of the thread. Stay frosty.

The first thing that I noticed when I took time off from work due to Covid was my insomnia improved. Then the weight loss started and I switched back to my old, smaller belt. My background depression is mostly gone. My asthma is improved (which may be because the air quality in the building). I'm noticeably healthier. I have the energy to walk every day. Even my typing accuracy has improved.
Yesterday I officially retired. Yay!

Already lost most interest in that. Obviously this isn't going well.

About the same age and I've never had eggplant in my life. Sounds like you've covered it for the both of us. Don't stop now!

I said 'No' because I can't imagine eating eggplant, ever.
Pain. Pains in places you never knew existed. Pains in places you've never had pain and never expected to have pain.
Short term memory is toast. Of all the things I miss in life, I miss my memory the most.
Weird things pop up like weird skin allergies to things you've never been allergic to before in your entire life.
Hair loss. Getting thin on top is to be expected, not feared.
The 'sharp as a tack' has gotten a bit dull.
In short, getting old is NOT for sissys.

Supplement your diet with Metamucil. One glass before bed time, you'll be shitting amazingly in the morning. No hassle and less wiping. I'm not even 40 yet and I take it, because it makes me take some of the best dumps ever. I also don't necessarily eat tons of fruits and vegetables -- don't get all the fiber I may need, so the powder helps.

I used to be able to eat super-spicy food. Only problem was the usual exit burn. Nowadays, it'll cause some distress during digestion. So, I just have to dial it back a bit. No more getting the hottest wings on the menu. Middle of the pack is fine. Less sweating and pain too

What is it about an eggplant parmigiana sandwich that hurts so much? Eggplant is just a vegetable. It shouldn't be doing much damage. It's the cheese and sauce and deep frying I'd imagine.

Yeah, it seems weird that eggplant would do that, I agree that it's likely one of the other ingredients.
Too bad, because eggplant parm is awesome!
And yeah, getting old sucks.

I'm now 70 and I can agree that pains in places which you did not even know exist will be more frequent. And, wait until you try to do a hard day's work, not on the computer, but like splitting a pile of firewood. But, hey, I've had a great life and I have absolutely no complaints at all.

Other than the physical changes in appearance...
- temporary discomfort in joints when standing up
- harder time digesting certain tasty but unhealthy foods
- short-term memory has gone to shit
- eye-sight is diminishing
- lost a few steps in athletic ability
- my piss stream is much weaker (wtf is up with that?)

Yes, the cheese sauce and deep frying isn't helping but I think it's also the seeds in the eggplant.
