The One and Only Fyre Festival Mega-Thread Featuring JaRule

This would be tragic if it affected anyone who wasn't a spoiled douchebro.

The inaugural Fyre Festival, a luxury music festival in the Bahamas, was postponed Friday after a disastrous opening day where headliners bailed, promised amenities went undelivered and festivalgoers were stranded at the airport.

With tickets priced between $5,000 and $250,000, the Fyre Festival, created by Ja Rule and entrepreneur Billy McFarland, promised a "premium" experience that included resort-style accommodations alongside performances by artists like Blink-182, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Lil Yachty and select members of the G.O.O.D. Music roster.

After a flashy, high-profile announcement for the festival – models like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin and Emily Ratajkowski all hyped up the fest – tickets for Fyre sold out. However, at the beginning of April, the Wall Street Journal reported that the festival was showing signs of initial trouble, with organizers missing payment deadlines and dealing with "miscommunication" woes after struggling to bring in potential investors.

Despite the concerns, the Fyre Festival continued as scheduled, with guests arriving Thursday ahead of the April 28th launch date, the first of two Fyre weekends. When festivalgoers began arriving at the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas, however, they found a garbage-filled, unfinished festival site that barely resembled the experience they hoped the thousands of dollars spent would provide; the island was previously owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar, organizers noted.

Villas were nothing more than "disaster relief tents," festivalgoer William Finley told Billboard. "With a mattress on some sort of bed frame. They're not that uncomfortable but the tents are so poorly made that they'd blow over in a second if there was any wind or rain."

Similarly, the "celebrity chef-prepared meals" on the island consisted of a cheese sandwich and small salad served in a Styrofoam container.

The dinner that @fyrefestival promised us was catered by Steven Starr is literally bread, cheese, and salad with dressing. #fyrefestival

Chaos ruled all facets of the festival: Luggage was simply thrown out of the back of a truck, feral dogs ran around the festival site and there were few security guards or festival employees on-site to assist attendees. Fyre victims have turned to Reddit to share their experiences, with one person posting that they witnessed "one guy [who] got punched out by security and they took his wallet."

As word of the disaster at Fyre spread, Blink-182 alerted fans that they would be canceling their scheduled headlining performance at the festival.

"Regrettably, and after much careful and difficult consideration, we want to let you know that we won't be performing at Fyre Fest in the Bahamas this weekend and next weekend," the band tweeted. "We're not confident that we would have what we need to give you the quality of performances we always give fans."

On Thursday afternoon, festivalgoers who were en route to Fyre were informed that they would not be continuing on to the Exuma Cays.

Organizers said in a statement, "Due to overcapacity on the island, we need to cancel all existing flights to ensure the safety of our guests. Fyre will reach out to every passenger individually to sort out details."

Those stranded at the Miami airport ended up being the fortunate ones as, with the festival in disarray, attendees traveled en masse back to the Bahamas airport for flights back to the U.S.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism also issued an apology over the nightmarish experience:

— The Bahamas (@VisitTheBahamas) April 28, 2017
After initially blaming the "unexpected" first day travails on "the growing pains that every first-year event experiences," organizers eventually wrote on Instagram on Friday that the festival would be "postponed" – even though they promised refunds – due to "circumstances beyond our control."

"Fyre Festival set out to provide a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience on the islands of Exuma," organizers wrote. "Due to circumstances beyond our control, we must postpone this experience. We are working tirelessly to ensure each guest leaves the island safely and ask for everyone’s patience and cooperation as we continue to provide ongoing updates via email and our official social media channels as they become available, including refund information."

Representatives for the festival, Ja Rule and McFarland did not immediately reply to multiple requests for comment.
Lesson here: Never attend a festival on an island that shares its name with a skin disease.

I know someone who is at this. Or at least he was planning to. He paid $2200 for two people all inclusive.

In a way it's fitting this would happen. It's the kind of thing that would happen to him. He's one of those guys whose choices always lead to problems.

Wow. I imagine this may damage Ja Rule's career and he will no longer lead the artistic or commercial aspects of hip hop.

I have no idea who any of the people mentioned in the article are. Nonetheless, I am amused at the cheese sandwich and feral dogs.

In lieu of full refunds, ticket holders will receive t-shirts with the slogan "You're Fyred" printed on the back. The only come in small sizes. And they are white undershirts. The print is actually hand written in Sharpie marker (screen printing was too expensive).

I like this tweet:
So to recap? Some Instagram kids just paid between $450 & +$12k... to be stranded... in a tropical tent city. Cuz some models told them to.
At least Altamont was free, and bands actually played.

The one and only reason I even know who Ja Rule is from back in 2000-2001 when I reviewed DVDs for another website. Every couple of months I would be forced to receive and review a DVD that I had absolutely no interest in watching or reviewing. One of those was a crappy Ja Rule/Pras vehicle called "Turn It Up".

Anyone who pays more than $25 for that line up deserves to get ripped off...and that's including the cheese sandwich!

Unrelated to this thread, I know, but I need to vent. Last weekend, the Chicago Tribune ran an article on the front page about various people who had been "ripped off" for taking out huge loans to attend various "for profit" schools. One man featured in the article borrowed $98,000 in Federal Student loans to get an MBA from DeVry. Shock of all shocks, he discovered upon graduation that an MBA from DeVry isn't worth anything to employers. He found a job as a prison guard. Now he's defaulting on the loan and suing DeVry as he was "misled" about job prospects upon graduation.

If you borrow $100K to pay for something, wouldn't you want to know what exactly you're getting for your money? Perhaps a brief Google search for "is an MBA from DeVry worth it" is warranted? Maybe actually find someone who works in a corporate HR department and ask them? Perhaps some common sense is needed? Nope, he's a "victim of the system". Inevitably, taxpayers are going to be on the hook for this garbage. Current estimate of future Federal student loan defaults: $450Bn. It's infuriating. At least Obama had the sense to decertify for profit schools from most Federal student loans programs.

I'm curious at what point did they realize they only had cheese sandwiches to serve. It had to have been well before people arrived.

Too funny and blink-182 headlining

Don't assume. These rich people that got ripped off are pretty dumb for being rich, but have the resources to stay afloat. Now poor people without money are easier targets for predatory lending and for for-profit-schools. Basically, don't assume shit. I don't know many poor people that will have access to an HR rep. Also, not many people know how to search for information on the internet.

Ok, now rationalize and generalize. And....go!

There's a good article in New York Magazine by a producer who knew a month in advance that there would be nothing to serve.

I Worked at Fyre Festival. It Was Always Going to Be a Disaster.

By Chloe Gordon

In early March, a friend of mine texted me to ask if I wanted to be a talent producer for the Fyre Festival. I’d never heard of it, but the gig involved going to the Bahamas and being paid extremely well. So I said yes and packed my bags. The festival was supposed to be a luxury music retreat where elite millennials could mingle with “influencers” and models. Tickets cost between $1K and $125K, gourmet food and accommodations were promised. I was planning to spend the next two months working on the festival, but a mere four days after I arrived I was back on a plane to New York because the whole thing, as everyone now knows, was a complete disaster. I was briefly involved in the planning of the event and got a front-row seat to chaos.

On March 14, I flew from Miami to the island of Great Exuma to get the planning started. I was excited, at least at first. Flying in, the water looked beautiful — but I was almost immediately warned not to go near it because of a rampant shark problem. That was an omen I regrettably missed.

After we landed, we drove to the festival site to assess our goods. When we arrived, my initial reaction was “huh.” This was not a model-filled private cay that was owned by Pablo Escobar. This was a development lot covered in gravel with a few tractors scattered around. There was not enough space to build all the tents and green rooms they would need. There was not a long, beautiful beach populated by swimming pigs. There were, however, a lot of sand flies that left me looking like I had smallpox. Still, I had hope.

My job as a talent producer was to coordinate travel and on-site logistics with the artists who would be performing: Blink 182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, among others, had already signed on. I would be working with an 11-person team and a few of the festival executives. The production team was all new hires and, before we arrived, we were led to believe things had been in motion for a while. But nothing had been done. Festival vendors weren’t in place, no stage had been rented, transportation had not been arranged. Frankly, we were standing on an empty gravel pit and no one had any idea how we were going to build a festival village from scratch.

Pending disaster aside, I started working from an island rental house. I contacted the booked artists’ tour managers to start to coordinate. Almost all of them had the same question for me, which was along the lines of, “Hey … Where’s our money??” I tried to email the business manager to get an answer, who said something like “stand by” for three days in a row. By the end of the week it became clear they would not pay the people they owed.

On Wednesday, Ja Rule arrived for a “site visit.” I don’t know if he actually visited the “site” but he did spend a lot of time on a yacht, according to his Instagram. Meanwhile the event planners were holed up indoors putting together a game plan and a budget. With so little having been prepared ahead of time, the official verdict was that it would take $50 million to pull off. Planners also warned that it would be not be up to the standard they had advertised. The best idea, they said, would be to roll everyone’s tickets over to 2018 and start planning for the next year immediately. They had a meeting with the Fyre execs to deliver the news. A guy from the marketing team said, “Let’s just do it and be legends, man.”

At this point it was pretty clear that this was a mess and I shared my concerns with the man I reported to. But he assured me that the Fyre execs were legit, and said some socialite was underwriting the whole thing. The budget was okayed and we were told to carry on with our planning. That night Ja Rule gave a toast. “To living like movie stars, partying like rock stars, and fucking like porn stars.” If Ja Rule is punished for anything perhaps it should be that.

Still, we proceeded. Thursday night we flew to Miami where we would work with a fully functioning internet connection. The artists still hadn’t been paid. It was my job to try and be charming while explaining to tour managers that no, there still was no money or a technical director for the festival. There was, somehow, a secured alcohol sponsor, however. This whole thing was playing out as a hilarious disaster. It was clear to most of us that nothing was going to come together at this rate.

The next day, things really started to fall apart. On Friday, lots of people on the production team got fired. I did not get fired. I did get a phone call that same night that said something along the lines of, “Congratulations, the guys will allow you to continue to work on the festival! For two thirds of what you asked for. And we’re not paying the artists yet.” So with that, I quit. I told the tour managers I had been in contact with that I was going to take myself off the project. And then I flew back to New York and waited eagerly for six weeks to see how Fyre Festival would play out.

Then yesterday, to my dark delight, the rug was pulled out from under them. In the morning headliner and all-around relevant band in 2017 Blink-182 pulled out, citing sub-par production standards. Last night the festival evacuated almost everyone off the island on account of they didn’t have food or tents for anyone (minor details). Today, after a wild night of #fyrefestival terror broadcast on social media, Fyre announced the festival would be indefinitely postponed.

I cannot explain how or why the bros running this festival ignored every warning sign they were given along the way. The writing was on the wall. I saw it firsthand six weeks ago. They overlooked so many very basic things. And baby, they forgot to make me sign an NDA.

re: The One and Only Fyre Festival Mega-Thread Featuring JaRule

the island was previously owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar, organizers noted.
The island became a location for partying. Carlos Toro remembers, "Norman's Cay was a playground. I have a vivid picture of being picked up in a Land Rover with the top down and naked women driving to come and welcome me from my airplane... And there we partied. And it was a Sodom and Gomorrah... drugs, sex, no police... you made the rules... and it was fun."
Sounds a lot better than that Fyre Festival.
