All the rest are states where I've overnighted and/or spent time actually doing things in.
Of the states I have been to, four would be drive through states: Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, and Georgia. Arizona, I've been in by walking accross the Hoover Dam from Nevada. Inidana, I eas in for only a few hours. We drove there from Chicago just to go into the state. The only remotely touristy thing we could fond within a reasonable distance was Michael Jackson's childhood home located in a neighborhood you would not want to walk around in.

That "visitation map" site is cool

My numbers are helped greatly by a few really long drives I've done for moves (NC to CA, weaving along the southern states; CA to WI; WI to GA). When doing those drives, I made it a point to see key places along the way (like the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, the Alamo, etc).

Michigan is the only one I think I only count for a flight layover (in Detroit).

West Virginia is a funny one. I didn't intend to go there. I thought I was taking a flight to Charleston, SC. Got off the plane and realized I booked a flight to Charleston, WV by mistake

I wonder how often that happens where people confuse two different cities with the same name and book flights for the wrong one.

Portland ME vs Portland OR would be a pretty big detour in your travel plans! Are there any other US cities big enough to have an airport with the same name?

I bet most people who book the wrong city realize their mistake before they get on the plane. Not me though!

Springfield IL and Springfield MO. It looks like Springfield TN, Springfield MN, and Springfield OH are municipal airports.

Shelbyville doesn't have an airport.

Springfield doesn't want the airport, it sounds more like a Shelbyville idea...

I traveled from NH to FL in an RV, but I am not counting any states we stopped at to grab something to eat or anything; so that reduces the number quite a bit.

You can count them - I did. Like I said, you're actually seeing more of the state when you're driving through it than if you're staying in just one city.

Exactly. I certainly counted driving through states. I only took out airport layovers.

It seems like I visited Vermont and/or Maine when I was a kid, but I don't remember.
Living on the east coast helps get the count up.

Does a layover in an airport "count" as a visit? What about driving through a state to get to another one?

If so, here's mine:

According to the OP, being at the airport counts even if you don't deplane.

Re: How many U.S. States have you visited?

I've been to 46 or so...I believe.

I haven't been through Mississippi, Arkansas, Alaska or Hawaii. I've driven through all of the other states at one point or another.

I'll be stopping in Mississippi in 2 weeks during a driving trip from Minnesota to Key West and back. Coming back through Memphis.

I've driven to all 4 corners of the continental USA in the last 3 years. Not the extreme corners...but close enough for me to be able to say I've done all 4 corners

Maine in June 2016
Key West in February 2015
Washington (Olympic National Park) in June of 2014
California (southwest) in February of 2014 and 2016

I love to drive!

That's kind of weak sauce as I've been to Houston twice for plane transfers, but I wouldn't say I've actually "visted" Texas. That being said, I put it down on my list. I'm at 24 states.

I count plane landings because you are physically in the state and bound by their laws while on the ground.

If we didn't count plane landings than there are some astronauts that were never on the moon because they never left the craft even though they were there.

All the lunar module astronauts who landed on the moon set foot on the moon. The command module astronauts orbited the moon. Those CM astronauts are never credited having set foot on the moon.

To each their own. I'm not counting AZ, sitting in air conditioned Sky Harbor Int'l, when it was 115 degrees outside in Phoenix.
