Mexican Supermarket Question
The rest of you can chime in, but I'm fairly certain Solid Snake will have the definitive answer to my question.
There's a local Mercado and Carnecaria where I like to get pollo asada, fresh tortillas, and a other unique items from. I have a recipe for mango salsa that requires one green chilli pepper. So I always buy one. Then, every time I take it all up to the front, the old ladies behind the cash register pick up the one little chilli pepper, look at each other, and give a little laugh.
So what's going on here? Is this a gesture between the two that means they think I'm a pussy for only buying one little pepper, or is it some kind of dick joke? Like it's a tiny little one, tee-hee.

You're a pussy. There's no dick joke in there. They're probably wondering why you're only getting ONE.

One is enough. I once made the mistake of mixing the whole concoction with my hands. It burned under my fingernails for an hour.
And for the record I do not put peas in my guac.

Was it a habanero? Those are the orange-ish-yellow ones. You could use gloves when preparing with it.
How often do you make a mango salsa, though? I'm not a real big fan of mango salsa - I'd rather have some regular salsa.

Re: Mexican Supermarket Question
It's a regular green chilli. Fresh, not dried. Maybe 3 inches long (which I've been told is adequate by several women). I usually mix it all up with a wooden spoon, but I didn't have one once and boy did I regret it.
It's not very good for dipping chips in, it's for pollo asada. Pollo and my salsa on a tortilla is outstanding.
1 white onion chopped
1 bunch of cilantro chopped
About 3/4 of a cucumber, peeled, sliced and chopped small
1 mango diced into small cubes
1 green chilli pepper diced up tiny
Squeeze a lime over the whole thing and mix it all together

It's pollo asado, fyi. Yeah, that sounds like a very mild salsa if you're just using one. I can almost understand using just one habanero but 1 of the various green chiles out there will never have the heat that a habanero has.

Right Carne Asada, Pollo Asado I get it mixed up a bit.
Anyway, one is enough for me. Hot enough to burn the membrane under the fingernails? Yes that's hot enough, thank you.

It doesn't bother me. I've just always wondered what was up.
What if I bought four and they still laughed? :O

Mabuse... it's cuz you're white and you're buying one. You're hitting the stereotype that you're a pussy w/ peppers. White Americans in the US are typically known as the pussies of facing the pepper.
Yeah. Ain't no fucking way a Mexican just buys ONE pepper. That's just weird.

What now? Mabuse has polio?
Speaking of things like that, what ever became of Dr. Mabuse? Did he get the polio too?

Re: Mexican Supermarket Question
Nowhere near a habanero, but some of those green chiles can get pretty hot. When I get my bushels of roasted chiles, I usually go with 1/2 hot, 1/2 medium. Only using hots gets to be too much for me. At least for making green chili. I can see how the sweetness of the mangoes would offset a single hot green chile.

Re: Mexican Supermarket Question
Green chiles should be roasted for best flavor. You do that by buying a whole bag, and having it roasted fresh by the market. (or take it home and roast it) I suppose you could roast one on your stove or grill, but it does seem silly.

It's because they heard how easy it is to make you fly off the handle and they are excited that they will end up as subject of one of your threads on Dvdtalk.
