If we didn't have rodents like rats we'd likely be overrun by insects, and without mosquitoes a lot of birds and fish would starve.

There are supposed to be over 1 quadrillion ants on the planet.

Sounds to me like enough to feed the birds and fish for a while.

Re: So ... this ZIKA virus

Well for the last 4 years i have worked on a Dengue Vaccine Study for the US Military, followed by a Chikungunya study and i begin a Zika study in November. The three of them have been prevalent in the Caribbean, and a hell of a lot of people have had long periods of illness due to the first two. I have a friend and both he and his wife had Chik and they didn't fully recover for almost a year. She still has problems with one arm due to it.

The thing is that even though they are considered widespread, you would still be very unlikely to get them if you were vacationing here. Use spray and try to be conscious of the situation for any place you are visiting.

When I visited South Georgia Island a handful of years ago, they were in the process of eradicating human-introduced rats. Apparently it was finally successful. The island isn't all that large, but it took them 5 years and almost $10 Million. To do so across the entire Earth would be near impossible. Without knowing what all rats and mosquitoes ARE good for, I do agree with you though.

Hope everyone's ready for more cases in Texas. It's likely there.

Re: So ... this ZIKA virus

It seems like over the last 10 years I've lived in fear of some pandemic every other year. I'm 44 now and in the last decade I've had to worry about H1N1, then Mad Cow, then it was West Nile, then it was Ebola, and now it's Zika.
When I was 15-34 years old I really only had to worry about getting AIDS because it was going to kill off half of the world. Now I have so much other stuff to worry about including AIDS because like H1N1, it's setting the news world on fire!

The internet didn't exist when you were 15-25 years old. That's your answer. Seriously, things are hyper-reported and alarmists and fearmongers act within hours and days now instead of years like Before Internet.

Don't you remember Killer Bees, The Coming Ice age, and the Nuclear Apocalypse?". I "lived in fear" of all of these in the late '70s - early '80s! Yep. Before Internet.

Now, Zika is another 'fear' to add to a growling list. Living in fear is becoming old hat.

Oh yeah, I forgot the Nuclear Apocalypse! I think I was around 11. Right around when the tv movie "The Day After" came out. We learned how to get under our desks at school. Like that would have made a difference!

Things have changed. I didn't even know about the Hong Kong Flu epidemic when I was a child. It killed a million people. Nobody told us kids.

Re: So ... this ZIKA virus

They will be spraying for the 4th time in my area and by my area, I'm talking walking distances.
Apparently these areas have been in places where people have been infected while traveling out of country or visiting ... Florida.
Not sure I understand the need to spray just because someone is infected. No evidence of the actual mosquito that carry the disease in the area. I assume they feel precautions need to be taken if they snuck one in their luggage?

Our desks in school would barely survive an obese child sitting down in one.

Not quite sure how the teachers expected them to protect us from a 6,000 C nuclear fireball.

Not at all. The school desk is excellent protection from alpha particles and beta particles. A good old-fashioned desk with a steel chassis is also protection against gamma rays.

As we learned during the Reagan administration, people were too worried about nuclear war.

Mr. Jones told his guest that nuclear war was ''not nearly as devastating as we had been led to believe. He said, 'If there are enough shovels to go around, everybody's going to make it.' The shovels were for digging holes in the ground, which would be covered somehow or other with a couple of doors and with three feet of dirt thrown on top. ... 'It's the dirt that does it,' he said.''
