Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

South of Mpls/St. Paul...got about 5-6" last night (I believe).....and its already melting as of 2pm today.

Was supposed to get 6-12" so it was a bit on the light side...but its 38 degrees now with very sunny conditions so my driveway is almost clear now without any plowing.

Spring is definitely coming.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

I'm in suburban Maryland, between D.C. and Baltimore. So far we've got about 3" of really heavy, wet snow. Going to head out in a few minutes to see how my snowblower handles snow this heavy.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Arlington, VA here, just outside of DC on the other side from Kevin. Maybe an inch of heavy, slushy snow. The Federal government didn't even fully close (3-hour delayed opening) so it wasn't too bad.

They heavily downgraded snowfall estimates in the last 12-18 hours before the storm over what they were predicting for us earlier. What we got was on the low end of even the revised estimates. At one point we were looking at 6"-12".

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

There was a local news story just about ten days ago about a petition being sent to the Loudoun County (VA DC suburbs) school system to "return" some or all of the 14 inclement weather days baked into the school calendar so that kids could get out for summer early since this school year, there have been no weather-related school closings at all. Undoubtedly, most of the signatures on the petition were probably from the school kids themselves and the school's reaction appeared to be, "yeah, no, not gonna happen."

Well, Loudoun closed today so those kids will get at least one snow day at home.

Downtown Chicago is messy this morning, as are the burbs. Apparently the drive from O'Hare to downtown was at 3 1/2 hours.

Upstate NY, west of Albany here. About one foot on the ground so far. Blizzard warning for the entire area and 25-30 inches expected by the time this is over.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Work not too far from Arlington but live up in Maryland. Work was kind enough to provide a hotel last night, so I didn't have to deal with an icy slush mess of digging out my car and commuting an hour or three to work.

Nice that it was better than expected, but it still took 30+ minutes to dig out my car and drive .2 miles this morning.

And Extended Stay America sucks. No house keeping or linen on duty last night, gave me the wrong room type, crappy bed, kitchen drawer handle fell off in my hand.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Was supposed to fly to CT today. That was cancelled. Heard about the state-side travel ban in CT today as well. Hope everyone stays safe.

Here in Minneapolis, we got maybe 4 inches of snow on Sunday. The most snow we've had in the last 3 months.

Yeah, I'll take Homewood Suites or, failing that, Residence Inn over Extended Stay America any day of the week. The other Marriott "Suite" brands (Towneplace and Springhill) are crap, however.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Kind of getting clobbered here, today.

I thought I was going to get away with only having shoveled the walk once this season.

Shoveling this morning, and it's light snow, so easy to shovel, but so windy that you try to throw it and half of it blows back in your face. Just looked and most of it has blown back over, anyway.

We are no longer cold in L.A. We were practically swimming for the past 3 months - cold and rain. It was fucking 90 degrees yesterday.

But what I really wanna know is how far in advance of this non-event did the local DC media start to freak out about shortages of Bread, Milk, Water and Toilet Paper at the grocery stores?

I don't watch local news. It gives me cancer.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

Looks like the rain line is coming through on the north shore of Mass--not going to get quite as much snow as expected. Wicked winds, though!

News orgs are more than happy to turn anything into a major crisis and life-threatening event. And when people die, it's even better.

Re: Winterpocalypse 2016!

I don't blame people buying up food before a storm. Better safe than sorry. And, if nothing bad happens, there's extra food.

I guess I don't see a problem. Except for those who just like to bitch over every little thing.

I'm just puzzled that anyone wouldn't have enough food in their house to last them at least a couple of days, to begin with.

Especially for a late season storm. Even if you do get a pile of snow, it'll be gone in a day or two. It's not like you're going to be stuck at home for a week.

Yeah, I never understand that. We could probably last at least for a couple months with what we have.
