How Many Hobbies or Activities are you involved in?

We haven't visited this in a couple years so I was curious as to what people are up to. Obviously most of us are on this board because of a love of film and the "new" media DVD's. But we know there are many more.

I get aggravated with my son. He's an adult yet he spends the vast majority of his time playing video games. He should be going out, getting drunk, getting laid, and showing up to work in the same clothes he wore yesterday like any other good kid in their 20's.

Me, I have too many sometimes but I'm never bored.

DVD's: I don't even consider my self a collector any more because I buy so few. However I still am an avid consumer of film and TV. I just prefer to rent. At the height I was buying 5+ a week and renting, ripping and copying another 10 or so a week from Blockbuster. It was a sickness.

Woodworking: I am an avid woodworker. I've made furniture and made my kitchen cabinets but most of the stuff I do is arts and crafts type stuff. We do 3 big shows a year and although it's not a money maker, they pay for most of the hobby. Here is a small sample of stuff I've made http://lumberjocks.com/JimRochester/projects

Volunteer: I volunteer for the town I live in. We are Peace Officers and we assist the Police Department with public safety during special events. Christmas on the Canal, Canal Days, Fireman's Carnival, Halloween, various parades. WE direct traffic, patrol the schools and parks after closing and do house checks. Keep an eye on people's houses when they leave for vacation or Fl. for the winter.

My car: I have a 1978 Tran Am pictured in my Avatar that I am slowly fixing up. I graduated high school in 1977, the year Smokey and The Bandit came out. Had a couple Trans Ams as a kid and always had a nostalgic need for another.

Home Improvement: love doing projects around the house. Rehabbing rooms, building decks, etc.

Politics: I love following politics. I listen to a lot of talk radio during the day. I love watching different newscasts of the same events and see the differences of how they are portrayed. In a nutshell, I am a fiscal conservative but a social liberal. Smoke all the pot you want just don't drive and marry whoever you want, just be careful what you wish for, you may get it. (See EddieMoney for clarification).

Running: I've slowed down due to arthritis in my hips but I still run 3.25 miles every other day.

Martial Arts: I've done the martial arts for over 20 years. I did karate from 94 until about 09 reaching the rank of 4th degree black belt. I've done Jiu Jitsu since 2001. Due to injury and age I've not gotten much rank but I still go twice a week and get beat up by the youngsters.

Some reading: I don't read novels but I do enjoy reading about the above subjects as well as books on Elvis and WWII.

Internet: I found out this week there was more on the internet than just porn. I'm not going to waste my time on any of it but it was a fascinating discovery.

Football: not a great sports fan. Don't follow anything but football. In the early 90's I had my limousine service and was involved with the Buffalo Bills a lot and met many of the Giants, Cowboys and others they played during the Super Bowl years. That got me interested in football and still follow it.

A couple old hobbies I've gotten away from

Golf: used to be an avid yet crappy golfer. I had a job with freedom and the money to belong to a nice entry level club. Played almost every day for a few years. The crash took the money and although have played on occasion, haven't had the passion to get back into it.

Shooting: Never hunted but did a lot of target shooting and collected a few guns. Due to tinnitus I haven't shot in ages and my guns are in my son's safe.

Coins: have a whole box of old coins I collected as a kid but haven't looked at in decades.

^^ Damn shame, I'd say beer is one for me. Also DVD/Blu Ray watching. And photography, both as a business and personal.

Do my kids count? Because once you have them, they end up becoming your hobby.

I only really have free time to watch TV, an occasional movie and play video games. I do enjoy going to sporting events, but those are pretty rare these days.

I work a full time job in sales. I usually leave the house at 7:00 am and get home around 3:30pm. I do the BJJ on Tues and Thurs eves. Everything else kind of gets packed in to Saturday, Sunday, Monday eve and Wednesday evening. I run before work. and most of the town events are weekends or holidays.

Exactly. My son started with the karate and after a couple months it looked fun, looked like good exercise and I was there anyway so I started. We also used to enjoy going to Bills games in the early 2000's but back then I got free tickets from work.

The golf was easier when the kids were early teens because both of them played as well so it was easier to justify the membership.

I started volunteering at the kids Catholic grade school. When they went to middle school I heard about the town position so transitioned to that. That's only about 20 times a year total

Re: How Many Hobbies or Activities are you involved in?

Sports - I work in the industry go figure

Movies - I try to see a movie in theater 3-4 times per month in addition to renting BDs and streaming when I have time.

TV - Huge TV junkie

Food - I'm a pretty big foodie and I enjoy dining out at different places and sometimes trying unique things I'm not accustomed to. I also enjoy taking photos of unique foods I try.

Traveling - This is what I'm most passionate about. I try to take a big trip in the summer after my work season starts slowing down. Last summer I went to Thailand, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Next summer I'm hoping to go to Shanghai, Bali and Thailand again.

I blog and take a lot of photos of my trips and post them on Facebook. My co-workers and friends seem to enjoy following my adventures and always ask me when my next trip is.

Used to be a somewhat regular gamer. I enjoy it still, but don't have as much time to play my games as I did in the past.

Underwater photography.

I've slowed down buying movies to just a few per year. Diving takes up so much of my time that I don't know about any recent films. I haven't been to a theater in years.

I used to work for blockbuster so I spent a ton of time on I hateblockbuster.com might not count as a hobby though.

Up until ten years ago it was comic books.
Now it's watching movies at home and I dabble in bonsai.

Btw DJariya going to the movies that often have you considered that movie pass thing?

Re: How Many Hobbies or Activities are you involved in?

Movies- going to see them at theaters, discussing them online and with friends, collecting Blu-ray's, DVD's, etc.
TV Shows- pretty much the same as movies only with tv shows.
Video Games- not a huge gamer but I enjoy playing from time to time.
Comics- I don't buy a ton on a regular basis but I have a decent amount of trades.
Collectibles/Action Figures- a hobby I picked up again fairly recently, I've always enjoyed figures and whatnot though.
Music- I find myself listening to less new music now days and tend to stick with bands that have been around a while. Still enjoy my favorites and the occasional concert.

Off road motorcycling
Hockey
Playing guitar
Playing Piano
Movies
Electronics
Music listening and comparison (i.e. different masterings, etc.)
Pinball
Astronomy/astrophotography
Puzzles of all sorts
Math
Craft beer

Is fixing stuff a hobby? I enjoy doing that, too. Electrical, electronic, mechanical, etc.

Guess I should've checked 10+.

Hey, you knew your limits. Then it's good you stopped. I have friends that didn't.

Very cool! I've pondered doing this, but for now I may try drone photography.

Also, like Deftones, I have kids. 3 to be exact. So they count as a hobby as well. The most expensive, time consuming kind of hobby. Fun - and exhausting.

Re: How Many Hobbies or Activities are you involved in?

Video- been collecting since 1983. Divided into three areas. 1. Brand new movies/tv shows to add to collection. 2. Obtaining older films been wanting to add to collection. 3. Upgrading(mostly to BD), an older film still gets dvd release still from time to time that I already have. WB Archive is releasing The Strangler first time in ws and 16x9. Had the tape, transferred to dvd-r, then came on TCM which was upgrade, now the Archive.

Music- been collecting since 1970. Except for few, everything switched to cd. A new cd I'm interested in are few and far between. Gone back and picked up all the stuff I couldn't afford when younger. Now I buy a lot of stuff from Sundazed, Bear Family and Ace records. Have really gotten into post war R&B, 50s Rockabilly an R&R. Currently making genre/era specific flash drives. Each drive is like a separate commercial free radio station. Listen on random play.

Watch theatrical features in home theater with big screen and sound system. Went whole nine yards.
Watch tv, including DVD, on livingroom tv with two 5 disc changers loaded with 10 different shows.
Have separate room and sound system for listening to music.

Do not own ipod. Have never streamed audio or video. Will download album from iTunes if OOP, burn hard copy, make cover. Will download songs for cd compilation.

Comics- read Marvel religiously from 1965 to 1995/96. Last one I bought was when Peter and Mary Jane's kid was born. Green Goblin stole it and they were told it was dead. Past few years I've gotten into collecting silver and bronze age reprint TPBs. Marvel Materworks, etc.

Video, music and comics are cataloged with Collectorz software.

Model kits- got into this in late 90s when Polar Lights started repopping the old Aurora kits. Graduated into vinyl and resin kits. Have workbench in garage. Air compressor for air brushing, dremel, woodworking tools/supplies for making bases. Summer only. No heat in garage.

I live one mile from Kauffman Stadium where Royals play. Can sit on my porch and watch the fireworks. Needless to say, baseball has preoccupied a lot of my time past couple years taking away from other interests.

I have been toying with this idea as well, just waiting for my kid to get a bit older so that he can do more than just watch the thing fly around.

Currently, I volunteer at the major fundraisers for his Catholic school (typically the clean-up crews for the German festivals), and do some freelance design work for a cancer research foundation from home. I work two regular jobs in addition to that, so I don't have a lot of spare time for much else that doesn't involve the wife and kid.

I guess the craft beer would qualify (maybe three a week for me, and there is an all-ages brewery and jazz club about a mile from the house that we all enjoy), and we also enjoy trying just about every new restaurant that opens up in town, so I'll throw "craft food" in there as well.

I also stopped collecting DVDs and really never started with Blu-Ray (we have maybe 20) because we stream just about everything these days, even on road trips.
