So, has anyone wondered what will happen once OPEC eventually increases prices. One day it's $1.75/gal and we're all singing Everything Is Awesome...and then in a week it's back up to $3.99 (or more). That certainly won't fair well for an economy that was hooked on cheaper gas.

I have a really, really Nasty feeling that's going to happen soon, pessimist that I am, I'm worried that this is too good to be true. I'm from the suburbs, there isn't much public transit in my neck of the woods, and I've been driving myself so long, I honestly think I'd be a little uncomfortable riding the bus.

The alternative is that it doesn't go down so we don't get hooked. I started driving when it was 55 cents. Every time it goes down people buy more SUV's and get careless, when it goes up they pull in the reigns. The difference is, at these levels people remember the pain so they don't change their habits as drastically each time.

Gee, I was excited to see $2.69 the other day (Giggedy). Now I feel like I'm getting corncobbed again, just like when it was $4 per gallon.

According to USA Today, NY is the highest in the lower 48 states at $3.06. I can see why Alaska and Hawaii are more. NY lawmakers should be ashamed, they complain about the young people moving to greener pastures yet through legislation, have made it harder for the working class and easier for the welfare class.

Re: I just paid $2.97 / gal for gas! Hoo-ray!?

Oil just fell to below $60 a barrel last week so expect pump prices to drop further. Below $2 is possible in some areas, even though the ones around me are still in the $2.90 range. OPEC doesn't meet again for a few months so production cut for those countries won't happen soon. Besides, the US is producing record amounts of oil, and my theory is that the Saudis really want the US shale producers to suffer. The Saudis can still profit from $30 oil because their production costs are low, but US shale oil needs around $50-60+ to profit. The trick though is that some OPEC countries are suffering from low oil prices even though the Saudis are doing ok

Just my theory.

Re: I just paid $2.97 / gal for gas! Hoo-ray!?

The price will continue a downward trajectory for the near term with 100% certainty. An interesting article in this weekend's WSJ points out the factors in place and the risks. There are serious risks to job growth worldwide (even though that seems counterintuitive). As recently as 2010 Nigeria shipped 1,00,000 barrels a day to the U.S., now that number is zero. All the exporters are scrambling to increase their sales to the emerging markets, India, China, and Indonesia. OPEC will be under pressure as many members want to maintain their quotas regardless of price.
2008 U.S. produced 4,700,000 barrels a day, now it's 8,900,000 a day. High quality.

That's some seriously good news. Everything doesn't, and can't always be about sustained, continual worldwide growth. The increased production of oil in the US means we're relying less on other countries (ie, other economies) and doing more to boost ouput in our country. That's good in my book.

And it gives the greedy Arabs something to think about when they want to raise the price of a barrel to $120 again.

Eventually, long term, this will happen due to the finite resource that crude oil is, but it may not be as much an artificial inflation as happened in '73-'74 and '2005-06 and '11-12.

The Arabs never wanted $120 oil. SA has been bleating for years that they wanted $80 oil. Now they're just out for blood.
