Serious question about physical exams

So... just curious.

Growing up and well into my 20s, anytime I would go to the doctor for my physical exam, I would be asked to undress down to my briefs/boxers. The entire exam would take place with me undressed this way.

Lately, though, I've noticed a change: over the past few years, none of the doctors I've gone to have asked me to disrobe for my physical. They don't even ask me to take my shirt off. Everything -- stethoscope, weigh-in, etc. -- is done dressed. Only briefly (pun intended) at the end am I asked to drop trou for the testicular exam. At least 90% of the exam is simply me answering questions.

Are doctors so afraid of sexual harassment suits that physical exams are done clothed now? Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm guessing many of the modern instruments just allow you to take your vitals while still wearing clothes.

Perhaps you're not as appealing now as you were when you were a taut, nubile young lad.

Fear of leaked photos.

It's not harassment if you enjoy it...

Takes more time to get clothes on and off and I don't think it's necessary these days. Plus or minus a few pounds on the scale won't matter.

Next time offer to take your clothes off, whether they want you to or not!

Re: Serious question about physical exams

We live in a much more sensitive culture these days and doctors are at the mercy of damaging litigation since everyone knows they have deep pockets.

I have deep pockets.

But it isn't because I'm rich.

Re: Serious question about physical exams

My doctor still has me disrobe. Does this mean he wants me to sue him? Because I'll do it.

Re: Serious question about physical exams

The only weird thing about my physicals is when my doctor has me bend over and sticks his finger up my ass. I don't know he does it when both of his hands are on my shoulders...

I switched doctors last year and noticed this too. I thought it was odd, but this must be normal for today.

Re: Serious question about physical exams

I went in for a self-elected physical (since I'm 30). Was prepared to have a finger stuck in my butt and some turn and cough. But nothing. He checked me out, did a blood test, and I left. Maybe I wasn't pretty enough.

Re: Serious question about physical exams

I asked my doctor at my physical today.

He said that doctors used to check the entire skin, but studies showed that it wasn't sufficiently beneficial. So now insurance providers don't pay for it.
