Yes, I get nervous. I have control issues, so anything that I am not in control of can flare up my nerves.

Re: Do you get nervous?

I have a panic attack just checking out at Wal-Mart. Anxiety attacks are a bitch. I have always been that way though. Even in school I had to take several summer school classes because I refused to do oral reports in front of the class. It got so bad that some of my teachers would let me come in after school and do the book reports or oral essays for just them.

Yeah, I can't do public speaking, but if there are hot women at the club I'm all over it. Don't know why.

I get occasional panic/anxiety attacks. Nothing sets them off, they just come. It kind of sucks.

Re: Do you get nervous?

Oddly, SPEAKING to a large group doesn't bother me; however, just BEING in a large group does. I know, it's weird.

I'm also not great in one on one conversations, particularly if my well-being is as stake - as in meeting with my boss, going on a job interview, or going on a date. I can feel my face turning red in such situations and anxiety coming on, and have zero control over it.

Earplugs. Seriously, they make Wal-Mart bearable.

Re: Do you get nervous?

I don't get nervous, but I do have anxiety/panic attacks occasionally. Like Shannon Nutt I don't have any issue speaking before large crowds (part of my job), but being in large crowds can set me off. It isn't the size of the crowd as much as it is the chaotic noise.

Re: Do you get nervous?

I've always been a nervous person, but started experiencing extreme panic attacks in my sophomore year of high school. What a miserable time I had getting any kind of help from our family physician. He put me through every physical test in the book (heart monitors, CT scans, blood work), but everything checked out fine. Finally, he had me fill out a survey that matched my condition to a tee. "This must be a mental thing," he told me. "The best I can do is write you a prescription."

I started on Paxil, even though I was way too young to be taking it and it was irresponsible for this doctor to be prescribing it to a 14 year old. It basically took away my personality and I started acting like a zombie. My mother was worried and scheduled another visit to the same doctor. She told him her concerns and then he told her to leave the room. Then the doctor asked me "Are you being abused at home? She's gone now, you can tell me." I told him my parents were wonderful and asked him why he would suspect such a thing. "Well, this doesn't just happen for no reason," he told me. "Are you trying to avoid someone at school? What's your problem?" Again, I told him that wasn't the case -- I didn't know why I was experiencing these panic attacks. He offered no further help (let alone a referral to an MD with more expertise in the condition) and basically told me to get over myself. That left me feeling like absolute shit.

Since general practitioners proved to be useless, my parents started looking into other avenues. My family isn't rich and certainly couldn't afford to send me to a specialist, but they bought me a self-help CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) course that helped a great deal. Perhaps trying another type of medication would have been beneficial, but the whole experience with Paxil scared me off of any mood altering drugs.

Not that it comes up regularly (if at all) these days, but speaking in front of a class was never a problem for me. Fielding questions might have tripped me up a bit, but reading from a prepared report was always easy as pie. My biology teacher even told me I should consider becoming a public speaker.

Rowdy crowds are also an issue for me. Doubt I'll ever take in a death metal show in my lifetime. I even avoided the lunch room on occasion because I had trouble tuning out the sound of everyone talking at once. It was like sensory overload or something... it gave me a headache.

Re: Do you get nervous?

Yep, especially in social situations, and have extreme stage fright.

When I was a teenager, my parents had their 25th wedding anniversary. At church, the priest wanted my brothers and sisters and me to say a few words to my parents in front of everyone. I was so terrified, I have no memory of actually speaking. I remember standing up before speaking, and sitting down afterward.

Re: Do you get nervous?

Not really anymore (I'm 30).

I was an awkward kid. Unable to identify with stupid stuff other kids do.

As a manchild, I am able to trick myself into thinking that nobody cares and nothing really matters. I'm still not sure if that's true.

I read somewhere that really stressed out, depressed or whatever kids' biology actually changes around while they're growing. And then it melts away when you're older. Somehow I turned into a well adjusted adult (I think).

I'm still unable to be sociable. But I don't have many (any?) friends so I rarely have to be.

Re: Do you get nervous?

For those of you nervous with public speaking, consider taking an acting class, an improv class, or attend some Toastmasters events. They're great ways to break that stuff down a little and have fun along the way.

1. I believe I had some sort of undiagnosed social anxiety. I have been in leadership positions, in front of crowds, doing theater, etc. since I was twelve years old. I am immeasurably comfortable in front of the people. However, when I am part of a crowd, I get anxious, especially if I don't know my role or what's coming next. It has made me skip parties or events from time to time, and it's something I'm aware of and am working on.

2. Last week we were away on vacation and came back to surveillance video of a woman trying to steal stuff off our back porch on the first night we were away (was too heavy for them so they left it nearby) and a purse snatcher rifling through his newest acquisition on our front porch on the last night we were away. Also, the woman came back a few nights later and tried to get into our nieghbor's house (we caught this on video, too) and the purse snatcher had kicked in another neighbor's door to get the purse and some electronics. That has made my wife and I a little more nervous the last few days than usual and it sucks to not feel 100% safe in our home.

This

Did a project at work people liked and I ended up having to present it to our director and other management. I paced outside the room for a good 10-15 min to try to break the nerves and get it done.
