I think I'm getting laid off

I work from home for a big company(11 years with the company almost 7 in my current job) and got a call today from my boss asking me to come in and meet with him and our HR person in the morning and to bring my work laptop with me. He is located out of state and has been in town this week meeting with his new boss.

I've been in the process of interviewing for another job at this company and my current role has changed in the past month or two due to some organizational changes. At one point I was asked if I was interested in a lesser role (but with my current salary) and I declined because I said I thought it would be a step backwards career wise. There was no implication that my current job was at risk of being eliminated.

My performance reviews have all been great and I've never been told of any performance of disciplinary issues, my current boss even had a very positive discussion with the manager of the job I applied for and shared my performance reviews with him so I'm hoping at this point it's that my position is just being eliminated (which seems very likely given the circumstances) and not that I'm being fired for some crazy reason. At least then I'd still be in good standing to possibly get that other job at the company I've been interviewing for.

My wife works and makes more than me and we have almost all our insurance through her work (I carry separate dental since it's cheaper) so at least that shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, not trying to start a pity party just needed to vent and see what an outsider's take is. I'm sure plenty of you have been there but this is the first time in my adult life this has happened.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

Step back, take a breath and go figure out what is going on first before getting too stressed out about it. I know that is easier said than done, but until you know exactly what is going on stressing/planning for it/thinking through all the possibilities may only make the situation worse. Trust me I've done that

Take a lower position at the same salary. Why not?

I should clarify, the lower position was not related at all to the one I've been interviewing for in another department.

I didn't agree to take it because it was a dead end position that I think would actually hurt my resume if I took it especially given that I've been interviewing for a job in another department. Again this was before I had any inkling my position may be eliminated so hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

If you have non-proprietary material on that laptop you may need for future interviews, make sure you take it off now. It will probably be hell to get it later.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

sounds like maybe they caught you with kiddie porn on your computer or something, chris hanson may be there too

Lay off is one option
Something illegal on your machine is another option

or maybe they just want to give you a new computer and have a touch base meeting with you since you work from home all the time?

It could be good, but most likely not, sorry

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

That sucks, if it turns out that way.
Back up the stuff you want on your laptop, just in case.
Stay calm.
11 years? You should get a decent severance, no?
Good luck!

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

Going out on stress leave RIGHT NOW would be a good option

Doesn't sound good by the way you describe it.. However, at the end of day, think of it as an opportunity and don't burn any bridges on your way out. Small world..

Hope things go better than we think...

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

Good luck, Cardiff. I've had my share of shitty things happen to me over the last 6 months or so, including an unplanned end to my employment. All I can say is, as cliche as it is, every time one door closes, another opens. This is an opportunity, and if you make the most of it, you'll count it as a blessing in disguise when you look back on it.

Yeah, doesn't sound good, but I agree with the thought that you can't do anything about it at this point so stressing would just make things worse.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

I was laid off from a job about 6 years ago now but it ended up being for the best. I had started a thread here as well and most peple were very supportive.

I'm sorry to hear it -- I know I was numb when it happened (I came to work one day and was immediately called in to my bosses office, so I didn't get a heads up).

Is your line of work something where you won't have difficulty finding a similar position with a different company or is it pretty specialized? No matter what anybody says I still think its a tough job market. I hope everything turns up for you in the coming weeks.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

I'm going to guess he's not getting laid off, they are reorganizing and eliminating his position, but are going to offer him another position within the company.

Why the laptop, though? Reconfiguring for different permissions/programs?

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

I'd say whatever it is, fuckem. You are in control of you, not your boss or HR. Don't feel like a victim and always appear to be in control, even if you are being let go. Thank them in the most professional way for the time and opportunities and show that you are driving to bigger and better things.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

Best of luck to you. I think you're probably right about being laid-off.

After getting a call like that, I'd have to write-off the rest of the day. I'd be so distracted, there's no way I'd be able to be productive,

Yeah, the laptop is definitely a red flag.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

I guess at this point I'm hoping for a layoff (never thought I'd be saying that) since the severance should be 60 days plus 2 weeks for every year I've been there. I really can't see any reason why they would be outright firing me but who knows. That would also not ruin my chances of the other job I've been interviewing for. I'll update the thread tomorrow once I know for sure.

I worked for about 90 minutes after the call basically just responding to emails that could be answered in one sentence, blew off one meeting, and signed off a little early since I wasn't getting anything done anyway. Been kind of in a daze ever since.

They might want the laptop there in case they offer him the lower position or the door. If he takes the door, they want the laptop immediately.

Re: I think I'm getting laid off

Telling you to meet in the HR office and to bring your notebook gives you enough suspicion and more than enough chance to do some nasty shit on the servers and through e-mail. From everything I've seen, companies usually call you into an office and while you're there your network accounts are locked and your computer may even be taken away - so there's no chance of you doing any funny business.

That was my thought in reading this as well.. If they suspected some illegal activity with the computer, they'd have asked for an immediate meeting so that he didn't have time to delete anything.. Granted, there are forensic tools to combat that, but not giving the person a chance to delete anything or even destroy the equipment is the best route. Additionally, as you said, if they were going to let him go they'd likely want to do it quickly so as to not give a chance to have anything happen to servers, etc. Though I guess that depends on his role and level of access. From things I've seen in the IT world, since IT support usually has a great deal of access, when they are letting someone go, it happens as you said.. They call you into HR and while you are in the meeting, your account is disabled/deleted so that you can't access it any more to cause any sabotage, etc.
