Last year we bought a set of barstools from an estate sale. The 20-ish woman selling them asked if we liked dolls. We didn't. She explained that grandma had several rooms in her own house dedicated to dolls. Grandma bought the house next door to have a place to store the overflow of her doll collection. Most of them were dolls from the 1980s through 2000s, not anything particularly old or exciting. She had lots of those so-called collectible Barbie dolls.

Now she was stuck with having to do something with grandma's dolls.

Yes, I know I could just get rid of everything in it and pay nothing, but that's not an option
If that is not an option, then you should pay for storage. Your hoarding has a cost. You either pay for it with a waste-dump apartment where you can't walk or have visitors, or you pay for it with storage. Given those two options (your only remaining options after you've ruled out the original one), the best remaining choice is more storage.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

$64 is a steal for a storage unit (I assume you only pay for 1 unit) and is a $768.00 increase in your cost of living. That is manageable, but may I ask what you are paying for rent?

I get that question all the time and folks who like me still guffaw at me when I declare that rent is so expensive up her in the Bay Area because they had to drill into me how good I have it.

Without being too specific I live in a section of Fremont not too far from the still newish Whole Foods on Mowry and I believe Paseo Padre Pkwy, and I pay $1,625 for a 1 bedroom that has room for a CA King (I have a queen size bed) plus the dresser and other stuff I have in my bedroom (dresser, shelf, Printer on stand, small bedside table, storage chest at foot of bed, + easy to walk around).

I used to pay less but that was back in 2010, so all things considered a bump of only $65-80 per month is manageable thanks to what I presume is rent control (the same unit could easily command up to $2,200 or more if I moved out, so at least $6,000 more per annum). The unit has no washer/dryer, but it does have a full size fridge, stove, dishwasher, counter space, cabinets (floor and wall), and room for a microwave stand and a section to the side with room for a smallish kitchen table). My living room area has room for a fairly large couch, a lazy boy, coffee table, tv stand w/55" TV, plus multiple pieces of furniture. You can also accommodate at least a pretty large air mattress that could sleep two when necessary.

I sign a 12 month lease to keep my rent fairly low by Bay Area standards and again, folks encourage me to hold on to this apartment as long as I can because my neighborhood is not a crime ridden cesspool, and I do not need room-mates to afford the place.

Obviously, I am a good low key tenant who does not want to risk giving someone an excuse to give me the boot. They are able to enter my apartment any time they need too because I know that I have never given management an excuse to warn me I should tidy things up before the next visit, or anything like that.

I guess my point is that I still am interested in what you pay, and when you have a good thing going you should at least do the minimum that keeps your landlord from having a ridiculously easy peasy to defend excuse in court (or in front of a mediator) if he/she decides to give you the boot. With the state of affairs in your apartment it would make it rough going if you decided to push back against attempts to give you the old heave ho.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

My rent just got increased to $935 per month- still lower than the current rates around here.

And I'm just gonna say fuck it and upload some pictures today- haven't done much yet to clean up but will at least make some progress later. Right now I have to go out and get a few things done (not buying more shit!)

Now I understand the real reason why you are hesitant to move and it is not that you may have to get rid of a bunch of stuff or find a new location to store this stuff it is that you will end up with a pretty massive increase in rent costs. I do not know of a decent apartment in even just an okay neighborhood that you could move into with out having at least 2 room mates to keep your share of the rent below $1,000.

You really are getting a good deal which is all the more reason why I am baffled that you like to live life on the edge by making it so easy for your landlord to find a reason to evict you.

I am willing to bet that even if they had to deal with the expense of hiring folks to clear out your stuff into one of those big waste bins you sometimes see on construction sites, along with having to strip the carpet, fix any plumbing/appliance issues, put in new paint, etc., that the landlord would still come out way ahead of the deal at the end of 12 months.

I say this because I bet the new tenant would be paying at least $1,500 - $1,600 a month if they are lucky, maybe more if your surrounding neighborhood is fairly nice compared to some parts of the city where you live (you live in San Jose, yes?).

Clean the place up dude...most people would kill to be able to live on their own and pay less than a grand for rent for a location that is not someones spare room in their house (and you pay for the room without having kitchen privileges). The last time I paid around or only a bit over $1,000 for rent was for my apartment near San Jose State back in 2002 if I remember correctly.

I can appreciate that the huge cost of living increase has you wary of moving out until you can land what you feel is decent job with long term prospects.

Good luck with the cleaning project!

No, I don't live in San Jose- I wish I could, but it's impossibly expensive there. Sacramento still has decent rent but it is going up- and I'd move in an instant if I could, but first I have to figure out where my next job is going to be.

Pictures in next post...

Edit: shit that didn't work. LOL. But anyway... it should work on your own pictures. I just tried a random one.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

All right, here we go- and I'm including comments to put these in context before anyone makes too many assumptions:

Bedroom:

I spend the least amount of time in here, and it's the most disorganized. I probably should tackle this first, but will probably flip-flop between this and the living room depending on where I decide to put things. The bed was custom-built by my uncle before I moved in here, designed to fit a bunch of crap under it. Presently I have some CED videodiscs, records in crates, boxes of 8-track tapes and then some crap thrown about randomly that needs to be organized. The chair is to get up there, most of my female company think it's fun but not all of them do. I'll get a real bed at my next residence, as hopefully storage space will be less of a problem there. In the meantime, I hope to do some more serious music listening in here when it's in better order, as this room has my 2-channel sound system as well as my only turntable and cassette player.

Moving on, the kitchen:

Yes, the drawer is STILL open- since someone pointed that out long ago, I now consider that a running gag. I would have to remove some things in it for it to close anyways, which may or may not happen. The soda boxes shouldn't be there, but they've piled up over the time I've been working 6 days a week. Those will probably be the first to go when I tackle that area- the reason I don't trash them right away is because I put empty cans in them, then set the boxes of them out by the dumpster for homeless people to take and cash in.

Bonus picture: floor of the entry way heading into the kitchen:

After my last update which looked pretty bad, one of the boxes of VHS tapes that my co-worker gave me fell down and they scattered on the floor. I had to laugh and decided I'd just leave them there until my job ended, as that date had already been set.

And in light of today's sad news, I give you this, my three main five-inch-disc players:

My Oppo UDP-203 will now be another thing to treasure. I hope someone else will step up and make something as good in the future, though the legal issues of getting around region coding have stopped other brands from being as great. Region coding is one of the worst things about physical media, but thanks to this player that isn't a problem. The HD-DVD player and the Pioneer above it are also region-free; I keep the Pioneer hooked up because it has hacked firmware that ignores all of the button lock-outs on discs, which is handy for some titles.

Anyways, I shall post updates as things are finally cleaned up.

Do these pictures meet your requirements, Why So Blu? I figured I should just go ahead and post these as they are instead of wait another day til they're cleaned up better. I am hoping they will serve as reminders in the future for me not to let it get this bad ever again.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

^ ??????

Anyways, I have to point out that I know there are some recently-bought DVDs and Blu-Rays in one of those pictures, just laying about. Normally I shelve them after bringing them home, this just shows how short on time I was when working. Getting them properly shelved is my first task, next will be to organize and crate the laserdiscs which are also laying about.

I assume thats all under the custom bed. If not, then there is something else stored under there.

Dude, do you really have to step on the chair to get into bed? I cant imagine any female company thinking thats cool.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

Alan, you seem like you have good intentions. You know a lot about movies and the history of movies. You seem like a lot of your collection is built on trying to preserve some of that past. I personally like that attitude to an extent.

But think about this... If something happens to you, based on what I see in those pictures, the folks that clean out your apartment are not going to be impressed to think that maybe you have stuff worth saving. It looks like junk. They would probably come in with a shovel and trash bags and it would be all gone. You do not respect what you have, why would anyone else.

If you actually want to help Alan, instead of sending him the HD-DVD, print out his latest pictures and mail them to his landlord with a fire safety hazard warning.

(Just joking Alan - thanks for sharing the photos. I hope you can clean, organize and pare down your collection so that you can display it and maintain it with pride.)

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

I know it looks pretty bad right now- but compared to how I've seen "normal people" treat their DVDs, mine are in pristine condition. My oldest ones will be 20 years old in a few months, but still look brand new. I've never left them out of their cases, and only in this case have any been sitting around not on a shelf. I'll put up some example pics later.

The stuff I acquire used, like the laserdiscs and especially the VHS tapes, are generally already beat up and I can't do too much to make them any worse.

BTW my friend who has been posting here has been waiting for me to admit that I have a problem since I want to keep the VHS tapes that my co-worker gave me, even after I transfer them to disc for her which is a dubious thing itself but not my idea. They really are next to worthless, mostly because they clearly state "This film has been modified from its original version" on them. I never even bought a DVD that had that message on it. But since I got these free and that's largely in the past now, I still want to keep them. And again, I know that means I have a problem. But in my defense, there's a few trailers and promos on movie tapes that were never on any other format. Some may be on YouTube already, but some aren't.

So just looking at a few of the VHS titles on the floor that I can make out. I quickly checked prices on eBay for:
Wild Things
Monster’s Inc.
Air Force One
Kindergarten Cop
Very Bad Things

All of those DVDs together can be had on eBay for less than $10 (and that’s not really looking hard for deals). How in the world can you justify spending your time and effort converting those tapes to dvd?! Give that shit back to your coworker and tell her you have better things to do than waste your time saving her (literally) a few dollars! For fuck’s same man. Have some self respect!

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

Why do people keep mis-spelling "Monsters Inc." as "Monster's Inc."?

I do want to see what previews are on those tapes, they'll likely be far down on my priority list for transferring though unless she asks otherwise. It's not too much of a "wats" of my time, but having them here could be considered a waste of space.

Speaking of Pixar, I heard there was a VHS tape of "Cars" that was only available through Disney Movie Club, and it's sort of desired amongst some collectors. No, I don't have it nor am I going to make any effort to get it. I would like to get History Of Violence or The Fog remake, which were the very last studio VHS releases.

Oh well that good. At least when you are evicted, you will have pristine DVDs to fall back on. I know this is a mental health disorder like any other, but you have to want to make a change. If you don't, people will make those decisions for you, and you aren't going to like those results.

Alan, how much space do you have left in your rental storage unit? Since you've already got it, you might as well use it for temporary storage while you get your apartment in shape.
