^ They decided that they wanted to charge a monthly (or yearly?) fee to allow photos to be embedded on other websites. So, the owners of those images either have to pay up or find another host.

For now, yes. I think, after it gets a certain number of views (embedded or otherwise), Photobucket kills the embed. So, sharing it with a few friends would be fine, but on a public forum such as this, after enough bots and people see it, it'll go away. What can be frustrating, as someone else mentioned, is if you've already viewed it, it might be saved in your temp internet files so it'll still show up on this page for you, even after it gets killed, but anyone seeing it for the first time after the cut-off, will just see the default photobucket embed.

Based on the name of the Photobucket plan (Plus 500), I would wager that after 500 views is when it gets killed if you don't upgrade your account.

edit: Holy shit, it's $40 PER MONTH for the only plan that let's you do 3rd party embedding.

Good explanation Dan, and holy crap at that price.

I noticed an old thread the other day and all my pictures were gone. Stinks...

I guess Photobucket doesn't want any customers if that's what they are charging.

The Photobucket change is a big deal on the car forums. For a long time, people have used Photobucket to host things like a detailed photo essay on how to do a particular repair, or an eight-year history of a frame-off restoration.

I only knew about Photobucket because of this forum, too. I think at least for a while they were making you watch a commercial while your photos were uploading, which seems a decent way to make money.

I had to do the math and 500lbs of non-eco DVD cases is about 3000 cases, so totally doable.

Also, I just post photos to a secret Pinterest board. I put up with their emails, and wonder how they stay in business, so I probably should start looking for another host as well.

Thatís what Iíve been doing with DVDs and blu-rays I donít want; donating them to Goodwill and using it as a tax write off. They just arenít worth enough for me to go out of my way to try to sell them. And even if I do manage to sell them, Iím getting what, a buck? Maybe two, per disc, if that? Even if somethingís rare, thatís not guaranteed that youíll get a decent amount of money for it. Anime DVDs used to hold some value, but even those are becoming more and more worthless unless itís something thatís been out of print for 15 years.

Because you uploaded so many photos, the service itself ran out of space?

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

I was at the dump in Sacramento on saturday helping a friend throw out a truck full of junk. Someone had thrown out a bunch of dvds (like Rush Hour 2 and Maid in Manhattan). I found it funny how low in value most dvds are now days.

ps. Alan Smithee should start hanging out at the dump

Thank you for the explanation!! now i get it

I have a hard time believing people will suddenly pay $40 a month for something they been accustomed to been free for 10+ years

On another note we visited a cousin over the weekend and the house was such a mess, clothes, papers, toys everywhere piled on top of sofas, desks, beds, etc. It reminded me of this thread. And to be fair Alan's place actually looked better than what we saw.
I been realizing i get very anxious when I see disorder around the house that I'm constantly organizing and tiding up. I guess its part of my OCD, I have to collect the whole run or series and display it in a certain ways..

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

I never saw Rush Hour 2 (I didn't like the first one), I would've taken that guy's DVD just to watch it. That's why that sort of stuff should at least be put out someplace where people can take them. Throwing it in the dump says "I can't get a billion dollars for this, so NOBODY can have it!"

No, what it really says is, "I'm tired of having this crap in my house and I want it out."

I understand your indignation at throwing out perfectly good DVDs, but maybe that guy (or gal, because, you know, Maid in Manhattan) had just had enough and wanted them out of the house. I can relate to that.

Normally, if I'm getting rid of DVDs or books, I take them to work to see if anyone wants them. Usually, most of them get taken. The rest normally end up at the Salvation Army. I have been known, however, to just chunk stuff in the trash if I'm in the midst of a cleaning frenzy.

With books, however, I've recently taken to leaving ones I don't want in random places. I left the last book I read on a table next to the elevator in my hotel when I was in Seoul last month.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

Alan, thank you so much for your thorough reviews. I really appreciate the extra length you go to to provide the background of extras that have previously appeared on disc, such as with today's Tom/Huck double feature Twilight Time review, pointing out that a featurette and commentary originated on a 1994 laserdisc. Stuff like this is a big part of what I look for in disc reviews now, especially with re-releases and upgrades. I really like reading about supplement participants too, and you are great about pointing that out as well. I get all dvdtalk reviews in my news feed and there are few things more annoying to me than clicking through to a review of a new catalog release I was anticipating and finding that it's been reviewed by one of the lesser critics who summarize the extras in a sentence or two, like "There's some cast and crew interviews and a commentary track." There's one in particular who is especially horrible with this - I won't name names but *cough* *cough* *cough* *cough* there's my hint, I coughed four times.
So THANK YOU ALAN. I guess it's good to hang onto certain things so you can provide info like this. All the more reason for you to keep your collection better organized and clean and get rid of the worthless clutter.

Yeah, too often reviewers here think they're writing a film review, and not a disc review. I basically don't care what you think of the film.

Re: Landlords on my case about my cleanliness!

Thanks for the kind words, even if they're in this thread - I'm intending on checking out my CED of Huck Finn (which I watched a while ago) to see if the film damage that's noticeable on the blu-ray is also on that copy. If it is, then it's likely part of the original negative and I'd always rather that not be cleaned up. One of my big reasons for hanging onto older editions, to check things like that.

I've moved into my new place, and I have decided to follow Alan Smithee's example. I'm now officially a CED Selectavision hoarder! I have a grand total of ONE! I bought it at a thrift store. Here's a pic of my disgustingly dirty place, with the CED right in the middle!

It's missing the box and instruction sheet. (All of the interactive discs had those.)
