I'm sorry about your diagnosis and appreciate your honesty. I guess we all do the best with what we have.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome, Party of Me...

I, too, appreciate your honesty (here and also in the thread about bullying). I'm glad for you that you're speaking with a professional about life as well as this diagnosis. Transition is, I think, one of the most challenging things in the world for most anyone to learn how to deal with in one's lifetime. While your family will need to do some emotional adjusting along with you, here's hoping they end up a supportive network for you as you come to learn how to live into this newly-identified part of your identity. Life is journey and it's a step at a time, brother.

I know we're usually at odds but I echo the sentiments of Norm de Plume and story.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome, Party of Me...

We found out earlier this year our daughter was autistic and had crossed the threshold into high functioning Asperger's. I'll definitely watch your video later and probably let her watch it to show she's not alone. This is her first middle school year and up until this point school has been very difficult for her not only from an academic standpoint, but socially as well.

to you

Re: Asperger's Syndrome, Party of Me...

Asperger syndrome (AS) is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one of a distinct group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
This does explain a lot.

It's brave of you to tell the forum this information. It partially explains some of the online skirmishes you've had with various forum members.

I wouldn't worry so much about the diagnosis itself, the psychiatric establishment is intensely concerned with labels to give more rigor to poorly-understood thought processes. We are still in the Dark Ages when it comes to fully understanding the biochemical processes of cognition and personality.

I needed to know what was so wrong with me, that every in-depth attempt I made to be understood ended terribly. This diagnosis has provided me with a starting point, reassuring me that I'm not broken or crazy after so many years of confusion.

Yeah, I would think of this as a positive thing, in a way. It's not like you've changed at all, but it gives you information you can use to help understand things better.

At least you are seeking outside scientific help.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome, Party of Me...

When I speculated this was the case a few weeks ago I also said that I'd lay off of some of my criticisms of your ideas because it's only fair if we are on the same level playing field.

A lot of your thinking is going to be linear and the more rules you have the more comfortable you are going to be feeling. Hopefully some of us will understand some of your views better and put them into a context where we can cut you some slack.

And no, there is no "cure" but behavior therapy can help quite a bit. Look up famous people with Aspergers Syndrome and you'll see a lot of people you may recognize who lead full (and often exceptional) lives.

Yeah, I heard the self-diagnosis part, just wondered if you'd confirmed it.

The video says he went to a professional and underwent some kind of 6 hour test.

Re: Asperger's Syndrome, Party of Me...

This is the shortest video he's ever posted -- and by far the most meaningful.

Lesson to be learned?
